Approaching Home Improvement Project? Keep These Tips Nearby!
Re-caulking the windows in your home will hep you save on utility bills. This prevents drafts, reduces mold growth, and lowers your heating costs. Before applying the new caulk, remove the old caulking with a chisel or flat-head screwdriver, using a hammer as needed.
Don?t forget to take safety into account when doing a home improvement project. Failing to do so might mean that you or a loved one are harmed, or severe damage is done to your home. Make sure you read the manuals and watch tutorials for your power tools before starting any renovation projects.
A great tip for home improvement is to personalize any project you undertake. Choose home improvement projects that really reflect your own personality and sense of style.
Look at the low areas around your property, including those near the foundation of the house. Any area that would allow water to pool up or run through the area must be filled with soil and compacted as well as possible to prevent damage to your yard. Water can, over time, destroy your foundation and even ruin the wooden areas of your home.
When making improvements, take a second to focus on your porch. Anyone who drives up to your home is going to see the porch first. Keep this area clutter-free and enhance its look with flowers or patio furniture. This will increase your home?s curb appeal.
Create visually pleasing bookcases by using wallpaper. A design that is unique but visually pleasing can go a long way. Put the wall paper on the back side of the bookshelf, when you put the books on it will show from behind them. The wallpaper will make your bookcase look better and stand out.
Apply asphalt sealer to your asphalt driveway to prevent cracking and crumbling. The main elements you need to protect your asphalt from include the sun and rain. In colder areas winter can cause havoc on your asphalt by freezing and thawing repeatedly. Add a protective layer by using sealants to make your driveway last longer.
When painting or demolishing, use a drop cloth or tarp to protect things like furniture and floors. If you protect these surfaces, you can make sure you do not incur any damages that will cost you more to fix. Some specific areas to keep in mind are freshly painted walls, light fixtures, carpeting and sensitive hard floors.
Balance your fan! Diminish the noises inside your house. A noisy ceiling fan often needs balance help. Adjust the screws on the fan blades, as well as the ones on the motor to improve your fan?s performance. When adjusting these screws, give the fan a thorough cleaning. Dust and dirt can throw the balance of a ceiling fan out of whack.
Take a small organizer and fill it with various fasteners. If you do this, whenever you have a project you?ll already have what you need without having to go the store to get it.
Get a new porch light that features a motion sensor in order to help reduce your electric bill. Depending on the brand you choose, you may be able to decide on the sensitivity and lighting time frames.
Buildings cannot be easily stolen, however, the supplies to build them can and will be if the opportunity is given. You should keep those supplies secure and locked up when you are not working. If a property is secure?all entries and windows are able to be locked?storing supplies inside is a good idea. When the home isn?t secure, it is nice to have a locked storage unit.
A licensed real estate agent can be an excellent source for home improvement advice regarding adding value to your home. They will be able to tell you what improvements will provide the most value for resale.
Insulation is a good way to prepare your plumbing for a cold spell, or just to be sure that the water runs hot through your pipes. Look for weatherizing tape or other forms of insulation, and apply it to your pipes and lines. When you use weatherizing tape, you will avoid damage to your plumbing due to freezing.
Any home improvement you make should make sense in terms of your house?s location. A home in a warm state like California would benefit more from adding central air than adding a fireplace. And, while a swimming pool might be enjoyed in a warm area, it might not be appropriate for states with colder climates.
An ugly air conditioner may be unattractive, but in certain environments it is an essential. It is possible to use a trellis or latticework to hide this area in a safe and effective manner. Remember to leave at least one foot of empty space between whatever camouflage you choose to use and the unit itself.
Now that you are armed with a few solid tips to guide you, making a sound decision regarding home improvement should seem less daunting. Remember, quality home improvements to your home will not only allow you to have a more desirable space but will also improve the overall value of your home.

Small Business Vs. Franchising Part 2- Which Do You Want ...
Franchises: Levels of Opportunity
Franchising offers franchisees a level of opportunity which is not possible in regular businesses. A start-up venture with an established brand, as well as with the support of seasoned professionals, is a tremendous advantage to a business person. Yet many do not realize that varied levels of opportunity are available within franchising. Franchisors can offer the ?standard? franchise but there are also additional options for franchisees.
Types of Franchises
?A mini-model ? suitable for those with less capital
?An ?in advance? option ? allowing franchises to take on additional units based on future performance of the first location
?A large territory option ? allowing an entrepreneur to become an area developer
?A master licensing option ? in which an entire country or State is your playing field
Ideally, franchisees should enter at the most suitable level for their skills. Most franchisors will enjoy a challenge but nobody thrives in a business if they feel overwhelmed by the commitment. When you are exploring and comparing different franchises, understanding yourself is an invaluable asset.
Remember that a franchise is a long term commitment ? maybe five or ten years. Although in regards to franchises, ?commitment? can be a relative term. Within the contractual commitment, the standard franchise is five years with the possibility of renewal for every 5 years subsequent to that period. The opportunities for renewal can extend up to a maximum of 15 to 30 years (and possibly ongoing) depending on the particular franchise.
Everyone does not have a clear understanding of franchise licenses. Many individuals are under the impression that franchises extend for an exact 15 or 25 years. Some people believe that franchises do not have an expiry date. The first franchise systems in North America did not have an expiry date. As franchisors leaned more about the industry, they realized that having ?no expiry? date was not favorable to franchising.
The ?lifetime? licenses ran into problems in two specific areas ? locations and losses. When locations began to show signs of age, franchisees lost interest and became complacent about their business. Since a neglected franchise can weaken the entire franchising system, the failing business becomes an impediment to future sales on the customer and franchisee side.
In addition, older contracts neglected to enforce rules and regulations about modernization. New locations did not open and the brand could not experience consistent growth. The whole system was affected in a negative manner. The ?lifetime? licenses resulted in inadequate regional representation and often in failed franchises. Today?s licenses include guidelines which encourage the franchisee to stay current in the modern marketplace.
If current franchisees let their business run down or do not market it in a proper manner, they need not expect a renewal following the five-year period. Modern ?renewable-on-conditions? contracts help protect the investment of the franchisor and the franchisee. These contracts help maintain and increase the value of locations and ensure the health of the franchise. Since franchises are an extremely synergistic setup, the guidelines set up a winning scenario for the entire franchising system. Offering distinct levels of business opportunities, modern franchising is a flourishing industry.

Meet Fiona, the blind dog whose video has gone viral
Liz Stavrinides
Fiona is a poodle mix who is doing fabulously well after being rescued from the streets of L.A. She's since become quite famous online.
Laura T. Coffey writes
If you?ve recently encountered (and cried over) a video of a pup named Fiona, you're not alone. More than 1 million people have watched the clip ? which follows Fiona?s transformation from a squalid, blind street dog to a spiffy, happy fluffball with partially restored eyesight ??since it made its debut online a week ago.
We tracked down the folks who rescued Fiona, and posted the video, to find out about her skyrocketing fame thanks to the freaky powers of social media and the Internet.
Fiona was actually rescued more than a year ago by Eldad and Audrey Hagar, a married couple who run a non-profit organization called Hope for Paws out of their Los Angeles apartment. The Hagars operate their rescue organization on a shoe-string budget; Eldad, 36, has grown fond of posting YouTube videos of their often-dramatic street rescues when time permits.
Fiona?s saga was originally conveyed in two separate videos last year. The first one showed her being saved from the streets, shaved, bathed and freed of a terrible flea infestation. That video made a plea for donations to help pay for Fiona?s medical care. The second follow-up video showed footage of Fiona undergoing surgery, being able to see again for the first time, playing happily and snuggling with the Southern California couple who adopted her.
Liz Stavrinides
Fiona is pictured here with her new family, Michele and Chris Gentry of Southern California and their other dogs.
?About 10 days ago, I had this idea to combine the two videos into one video,? Eldad Hagar told TODAY.com. ?It was the best decision I ever made in my life.?
The new seamlessly edited video has become a viral hit online and was picked up by major news organizations such as CNN and the Huffington Post. It packs quite an emotional wallop and calls attention to the plight of stray animals everywhere.
Hope for Paws
When Eldad and Audrey Hagar first found Fiona on the streets of Los Angeles, she was filthy, flea-ridden and completely blind. The Hagars say they're desperate to find more people who can provide foster homes for rescued street dogs.
?In L.A. alone we have 30,000 stray dogs at any moment,? Hagar said. ?People are walking by, seeing dogs like this and doing nothing. We would just love to have people change their behavior. Call someone. Call me. Call a rescue organization. Become a foster parent to a dog. ...
?Fiona would have died a miserable death out there, but now she?s so happy.?
Here is the video of Fiona?s rescue:
Fiona's rescue video is making the rounds online, in part because it the little dog's transformation is so remarkable.
To learn more about Eldad and Audrey Hagar?s work, click here and here. To see more photos of animals the Hagars have rescued together, click here.
TODAY.com writer Laura T. Coffey would have written a funny tagline if she wasn't so busy dabbing her eyes after watching that video. Here?s where to find Laura on Facebook and Twitter.

Jets can have headlines, Giants have trophy

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin gives an interview at the NFL owners meeting in Palm Beach, Fla., Wednesday, March 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Luis M. Alvarez)
PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Giants coach Tom Coughlin wasn't exactly gloating. Well, maybe he was.
Asked at the NFC coaches breakfast about all the attention the New York Jets have been getting with their trade for Tim Tebow and contract extension for Mark Sanchez ? in other words, their budding quarterback controversy ? Coughlin simply smiled and said:
"You know who won the Super Bowl even if we're not on front page. New Yorkers know."
Coughlin also says he doesn't believe in rotating quarterbacks.
"I don't have a lot of experience with that," Coughlin said, again smiling at the thought he has Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl winner. "Once you start to develop your guy, you like him to have the ball in his hand."
Coughlin seemed aghast when asked if he would take the ball out of his starting QB's hands for, say, 20 snaps a game.
"With our guy?" he said. "I don't do hypotheticals."
Not so theoretical is the coach getting a contract extension. Giants owner John Mara said the team expects to work out an extension for the 65-year-old Coughlin very soon, probably within a month or so. It likely will be the final contract for Coughlin, who last year received an extension through 2012.
"There's talk," Coughlin said, "and quite frankly, it will get done."
He indicated it will be for several years.
Coughlin also said he wouldn't discount Bill Parcells, his former boss and longtime confidant, considering the interim coach's role with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints spoke with Parcells about the job on Tuesday; coach Sean Payton is suspended for the 2012 season for his part in the team's bounty system that targeted opponents for hits that could injure them.
"I had one conversation (after the Super Bowl) with Bill and it was as if he had the league and all the key situations in your games and the other games on the tip of his tongue," Coughlin said. "He knew the ins and out of our season. It seemed like he knew the ins and outs of every teams' seasons."

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? They took the Lorax, made of bronze, the thieves they came, and now he's gone.
A 2-foot statue of Dr. Seuss' Lorax character was stolen from the San Diego backyard garden of the 90-year-old widow of the beloved author whose real name was Theodore Geisel.
Audrey Geisel noticed the statue and its tree-stump base were missing from the garden and were likely stolen over the weekend.
Property manager Carl Romero told U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/H9hxPz ) on Tuesday that he found footprints indicating the thieves had dragged the 300-pound statue to an access road and lifted it over a fence.
He had seen the statue Saturday afternoon, and Geisel noticed it was missing Monday morning.
Audrey Geisel's daughter Lark Grey Dimond-Cate cast two of the sculptures. One was the lone Seuss character to reside on the family's property overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla. The other sits at the Dr. Seuss National Memorial in the author's hometown, Springfield, Mass. Theodore Geisel died in 1991 at age 87.
"I want very badly to get our little Lorax back home where he belongs," Dimond-Cate said. "Wherever he is, he's scared, lonely and hungry. He's not just a hunk of metal to us. He was a family pet."
The Lorax has enjoyed special notoriety because of the recently released film version of Dr. Seuss's 1971 environmental fable, in which the mustachioed main character speaks out for the Truffula trees against corporate greed, personified by the evil Once-ler.
Dimond-Cate said she actually hopes the Lorax was stolen because of his newfound fame. Otherwise it could mean he was stolen for the bronze.
"I hope he hasn't been taken across the border into Tijuana for scrap," she said. "Worst-case scenario, I'll get the foundry to create another one, but he won't be the same."
Romero said the statue was stolen just before security cameras were installed, and few knew it was there.
The family has called San Diego police.
Romero said Audrey Geisel doesn't want to punish anyone and just wants the Lorax back.
"You can't sell it on eBay," he said.

"Who Do You Think You Are?": Helen Hunt - Family Tree Magazine
"Who Do You Think You Are?": Helen Hunt
Posted by DianeIn Friday?s ?Who Do You Think You Are?? Helen Hunt explored her father?s side of the family tree. I caught parts of it between severe weather updates, and finally yesterday I was able to see the whole thing on Hulu (shortly before watching "Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr.").
Hunt's family tree seemed full of distinguished ancestors. She starts with her great-grandmother Florence Rothenburg?a name later changed to Roberts, which a historian explains would?ve made life easier for the Jewish-American family?in New York City in 1900.
After her husband died, Florence took her four small children to Pasadena, Calif., a move that seemed strange for a newly widowed woman. But it turned out that California was home for Florence.
Florence?s father was one of the Scholle brothers, clothiers who started out in New York. Florence?s father (Hunt's great-great-grandfather) William Scholle opened a branch in San Francisco to serve the Gold Rush pioneers.
He built the business to the point he was listed in a newspaper article about local millionaires. In 1890, he was an investor, along with Isaias Hellman, Levi Strauss and others, in the Nevada Bank (it merged with Wells Fargo in 1905).
That was Hunt?s dad?s mother?s family. Next, in Portland, Maine, she learns about the paternal side. Her great-great-grandmother was Augusta Hunt, a local leader in the Women?s Christian Temperance Union.
Hunt was almost reluctant to learn more?her impression of the WCTU was that of a group of teetotalers who wanted to restrict everyone else?s freedoms. But a historian explained the extent of alcohol abuse at the time and the suffering it caused, particularly for women and children.
As part of the WCTU, Augusta supported a variety of causes, including female suffrage?and she lived long enough to see the 19th amendment passed. An obituary stated she was the first woman in Portland to cast her vote.
I noticed Hunt's voice-overs in this episode would say ?I?m meeting so-and-so, whom I?ve asked to research my ancestor so-and-so.? Past episodes have been presented more as a collaboration between the celebrity and researcher (whether or not that was actually the case), with the celebrity doing more active searching. I wonder if this is a new approach?
I appreciated all the history in this episode and the lesson to learn historical context before making assumptions about your ancestors. Ironically, early on we learned that Hunt?s grandmother?Augusta?s daughter-in-law?was killed by a drunk driver when Hunt?s dad was 5 years old.
The scene in which Hunt goes home to share everything she learned with her dad didn?t make the final episode. For those who love this part of the show, here?s the deleted scene:

The two girls steal kisses in the corner of this dimly lit cafe in Malaysia?s capital city, Kuala Lumpur. Their hands poke each other routinely. Life is good for Isa?a and Rina, two college girls who have found young love.
?Life is good,? Isa?a, the more outspoken of the two, told Bikyamasr.com. ?We live together as roommates, our families don?t know and we can just enjoy ourselves.?
But they are worried about the new push in the country to crackdown on the LGBT community.
?Yes, it is very scary. I mean can you imagine if our parents found us in bed together? It would be the end of us, really.?
Group to 'deal' with homosexual relationships
But for the two youthful girls of 19-years-old, if Assistant Professor of Psychology at the International Islamic University of Malaysia, Meriam Binti Omar Din found out about the two lesbians, she would attempt to put them through what he is calling an ?Islamic core group? to deal with homosexual relationships.
According to her, the new ?group? would aim to ?guide Muslims inclined towards same-sex relationships, such as lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transexuals (the LGBT community) back to the right path.?
She argued that more Muslms in the country are ?engaging in unnatural sexual activities.?
The girls laugh the professor off.
?She probably just is unhappy with her husband, or doesn?t have someone to love and that is why she is so angry. Or she is a lesbian and can?t admit it,? argued Isa?a, with her partner Rina laughing.
?Omar Din, however, seems quite serious about ?battling? the LGBT community, which in recent years has become more open and public with their life.
?The core group could somewhat curtail the trend. From what I gathered through communicating with LGBT, not all of them are happy with the life they are leading.
?They were drawn into the situation because of sexuality problems, low self-esteem and immoral lifestyle.??
She said society had been tolerant towards the community which comprised some very talented people in the arts, as could be seen by the willingness of relevant agencies to employ them.
?Getting them closer to Islam is an appropriate approach to detach them from same-sex dependence,? she said, dismissing social websites as a factor.
?Unnatural sex was already rooted before the existence of social websites. In the past, those who suffered from an identity crisis would run away from home and go to Chow Kit because they knew there is a group there that would accept them.?
The professor said the LGBT would stay away from mainstream society and join the cluster that they believed could accept and support them.
?They rebel collectively against society by wearing clothes or do things against the norm.
?They deteriorate further by abandoning Islam because they know their activities are against the religion?s teachings and as such, it is a cause for anxiety among religious circles, as well as Muslims,? she added.
What?s ironic is that both Isa?a and Rina said they were devout Muslims who attend mosque regularly and often find themselves together, studying their faith.
?You know, there might be a lot of LGBT who are anti-religion, but I find no contradiction to our lifestyle and our live in the Qur?an, so we are happily Muslims and proud,? added Rina.

Bentley to show SUV concept unaltered in Beijing
Filed under: Concept Cars, SUV, Geneva Motor Show, China, Bentley, Beijing Motor Show, Luxury
Automotive News reports Bentley is staying the course with the company?s EXP 9 F SUV Concept. The ultra-luxury automaker plans to bring the vehicle to the Beijing Motor Show exactly as it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, despite the fact that the concept didn?t exactly debut to resounding acclaim. Critics described the design as awkward and unbecoming of nameplate like Bentley, but the automaker says it wants to vet the design in as many markets as possible before finalizing the exterior. Here?s hoping the crowds in China are as repulsed as those in Switzerland.
The EXP 9 F has already been green-lit for production, and while we have no qualm with the thought of a high-riding luxury brute with a twin-turbo 12-cylinder engine under the hood, we?d like to see something a little less muddled outside. Bentley says an SUV will give the company a leg up in markets like the Middle East and China, where luxury SUVs remain king. Through the first two months of this year, the company?s sales are up 66 percent in China, putting the country ahead of the United States as the largest market for Bentley products.

Microsoft, TiVo drop suits against each other
Digital video recorder pioneer TiVo Inc. said Thursday that it had reached an agreement with software maker Microsoft Corp. for the companies to drop lawsuits against each other following TiVo's settlement with AT&T Inc.
Microsoft had sued TiVo in 2010, alleging that the Alviso, Calif.-based company violated its patents related to an on-screen TV guide. TiVo later countersued.
Microsoft software is used in set-top boxes provided by AT&T to subscribers of its U-verse TV package and the suit was a way for Microsoft to support AT&T's own legal battles with TiVo.
But AT&T agreed to settle with TiVo in January by paying at least $215 million through 2018. That made Microsoft's supporting suit less relevant.
TiVo said that dropping the litigation did not mean it is granting any patent rights to Microsoft.
TiVo shares rose 14 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $11.70 in afternoon trading Thursday. Shares of Seattle-based Microsoft were up 9 cents at $32.

Meratol ? Meratol Reviews Reveal Everything About Weight Loss ...
Losing weight was not a major predicament till the advent of modern weight loss pills and shakes. These solutions do cut down on your weight, as they promise to, but at the same time, they also extract something from you in return. These are side effects that could be and should be avoided using what our ancestors did.
?
Our ancestors didn?t face problems of side effects in the solutions they sought for good health. This was probably because they supplemented their diets with natural products only. They were sure that a subscription to nature for solutions to their health problems like weight loss or related disorders would not give way to side effects.
?
Excess weight is not bad as such, but it leads to some severe problems if it is left unwatched. Many of us opt for gyms and many of us bring the gym to our homes by installing expensive fitness equipments in our homes. This does bring a sense of fulfillment in our lives. But seldom does all this give way to weight loss?what we have striven for in the first place.
?
The important point is that these options consume quite a bit of our time, the time we could employ in other activities like recreation and entertainment. It becomes incumbent to seek solutions that give almost instant solutions to being overweight. It would also be a lot better to invest out time and money in solutions with proven results. There should be some testimonials to prove the efficiency of these health products we are going to use.
?
Another important point to be noted is the availability of reviews that would give a fair view of the proper use of these health products. Things would have been quite dim for those in pursuit of weigh loss had it not been for Meratol. The latter has been instrumental in providing weight loss to denizens all over the world for quite a long time, but there has been an attempt to make a visible dent on its popularity through the Meratol Scam. But like all scams, this too contains very little of truth. Meratol Reviews would reveal an in-depth analysis of the positive points in favour of the weight loss product.

Famous rock climber to share stories in Orono ? Outdoors ...
Renowned rock climber Beth Rodden will travel to Maine to share a film and tell stories over dinner at the University of Maine in Orono. The event, 6-9 p.m. April 13, will benefit the new Bangor Y Outdoor Adventure Club. Ticket prices and the exact location will be announced soon on her Facebook page. Find it by visiting Facebook and searching for ?Dinner and a Movie with Beth Rodden.?
?[Rodden] is about as well known as you can get in the climbing community,? said Jeremy Robichaud, leader of the outdoor club?s rock climbing program. ?There are the bigtime legends who almost everyone has heard about ? like you may have heard of Lynn Hill. But Beth is right up there, maybe just a minor notch below that ? She broke a lot of standards for females as far as climbing difficulty. If she?s not the queen, she?s the princess.?
Established by the Bangor Y and University of Maine in February, the outdoor club will provide low-cost outdoor recreation training and trips to area residents. The current programs, rock climbing and paddling, have already proved to be popular programs and in high demand in the community. In fact, the club is working to form a third rock climbing group to satisfy a growing waiting list.
?We run in the gamut ? we have kids as young as 11 and folks that are senior citizens,? Robichaud said of the rock climbing program. ?The median age is 36. We have total greenhorns, who have never seen a climbing rope to a one particular guy who has been climbing for 30 years and moved up to Maine.?
All proceeds from the upcoming event with Rodden will go toward purchasing club equipment and travel expenses for the paddling and climbing tracks, as well as other programs, such as mountain biking, that club organizers hope to add in the near future.
Rodden, now 31, made climbing history in 1998, when she became the youngest woman to climb a 5.14a grade route, ?To Bolt or Not to Be? in Oregon, the first of its grade established in the United States. Since then, she has completed numerous 5.13 and 5.14 ascents.
Rock climbing grades accurately describe the degree of difficulty and danger for specific routes, although the grading system can be confusing and differs from country to country. In the US, climbs are rated from 5.1 to 5.15a, with 5.1 being the easiest. Difficulty also increases from ?a? to ?d.?
She was a part of the first all-women team to ascend Tsaranro Massif in Madagascar. She was also the first woman to free climb two El Capitan routes in Yosemite Valley. And just four years ago, she redpointed the first ascent of Meltdown in Yosemite Valley (5.14c), the hardest traditional route led or established by a woman as of 2008.
On March 14, Rodden called from her home in the California Bay Area for a phone interview.
Sarnacki: In the climbing world, what would you say you?re best known for?
Rodden: I?m probably best known for crack climbing, I would say ? and climbing in Yosemite.
S: How did you first started climbing?
R: I was 13 or 14 when I started climbing. I just went to a climbing gym one day actually, and I was hooked. So I started doing competitions a couple months after that and I just got completely hooked on the sport. (She was living in Sacramento, Calif. at the time, and the gym she?s referring to is The Rocknasium in Davis, Calif.)
S: What are you doing today in your career?
R: I?m still climbing a ton, traveling a lot, working with my sponsors on product development and doing clinics and stuff for them ? pretty much the same old, same old, which is kind of awesome.
S: Have you ever visited Maine before?
R: Yes, but not for a really long time ? probably like 10 or 15 years. I was visiting friends who lived in Portland. (She has never climbed in Maine and hopes to check out some local routes after the event.)
S: So far, what has been the most meaningful route for you?
R: The nose of El Cap is probably one of the most meaningful, I?d say. It was first free climbed by Lynn Hill (in 1994), who is kind of a legend in climbing. She climbed it the year I started climbing, so it was always this kind of idealistic accomplishment that I?d love to try some day. Finally, I did it, about 10 years later (2005). It was great.
S: Do you have any advice for people who are looking to become better climbers and try more challenging routes? What has always helped you be successful?
R: Probably a few things. Honestly, one is just climbing as much as you can. I know it sounds kind of obvious, but the more you climb, the more you learn. Also, surround yourself with people you can always learn from. When I was a kid, I?d always climb with the owners of the gym and adults ? Ask a ton of questions, especially when you go outside and there?s a lot more logistics involved. I still do that when I go climbing with people. That?s probably my biggest piece of advice ? And obviously, as with anything, it?s good to be able to work on your weaknesses. I personally think the gym is a great place to improve. It doesn?t directly correspond with outdoor climbing, but it?s a good, convenient place to learn.
S: As an athlete, what is the most appealing aspect of your sport? What do you look forward to most?
R: I think I look forward to spending time with friends in a new place, honestly. That?s one of the best things about climbing ? you get to travel a lot with your friends to pretty cool places and do something that you all really like to do.
S: Do you have any advice specific to women who are looking to get into climbing or become better climbers?
R: I think it?s a great sport for women to do because I think there?s a big misconception that it?s all about arm strength, but I?d say it?s equally about technique and balance, which I think women are inherently better at. And I also think it?s a great way to go do something with your girlfriends. I go climbing all the time with a group of ladies and it?s a really fun way to interact. It may seem like a really macho sport, but a lot of women out there are doing stuff right alongside the men.
S: A less serious question: For the event, do you have any favorite food you hope will be served for dinner?
R: I don?t even know what?s being offered. I love food. I dunno, maybe some seasonal Maine things. That would be awesome. I love to cook, but I wouldn?t say I?m very good at it.
S: I noticed your blog ( blog.bethrodden.com) is about cooking and climbing. When and why did you start that up?
R: I started that about a year ago. I think I had a few friends that had blogs about food and their kids and other friends of mine that had blogs about their climbing, so I thought it would be a cool thing to do, and I definitely enjoy writing. I find it a big challenge for myself and I really like that. I?m trying to learn how to become a better writer.
S: For these types of events, when you tell people your stories and show your film, do you consider yourself to be a very talkative person?
R: I think I?m inherently kind of a shy person, but I do really good with questions. I really like sharing my experiences because I know when I first started climbing, and still to this day I go to as many slideshows as I can. I am really inspired by people?s travels and their stories.
Sponsors for the Orono event with Rodden are Cadillac Mountain Sports, Acadia Mountain Guides, Alpenglow, NH Bragg and Thrive Climbing team.
