A Whopping 42x Optical Zoom Makes Nikon's P510 the Zoomiest Compact Camera Ever [Cameras]
No. 16 Indiana beats Iowa 103-89 (AP)
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? Iowa did a lot of things right against Indiana. Defense wasn't one of them.
Freshman Cody Zeller scored a season-high 26 points to help No. 16 Indiana defeat Iowa 103-89 on Sunday night. Indiana scored more than 100 points in a conference game for the first time since defeating Iowa 110-79 on March 12, 1995.
Iowa made 19 of 24 shots in the second half and somehow lost convincingly.
"We shot 80 percent in the second half," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "You go on the road and score 89, you should be in pretty good shape. I was upset by a lot of things that happened on the defensive end of the floor."
Zeller made 11 of 12 shots and had four assists and three steals for the Hoosiers (17-5, 5-5 Big Ten),
"I've watched a lot of film, obviously, and he is as good as any freshman big man I have ever seen," McCaffery said.
It wasn't just the defense on Zeller that failed. Christian Watford scored 15 points, Verdell Jones III had 14 points and nine assists and Victor Oladipo had 12 points and six rebounds for the Hoosiers, who had lost four of five.
"We didn't help the helper enough," Iowa guard Bryce Cartwright said. "We had too many lapses."
Josh Oglesby scored a season-high 24 points and Matt Gatens added 20 for Iowa (11-11, 3-6). The Hawkeyes shot 63 percent from the field, but committed 17 turnovers. Since defeating Michigan, the Hawkeyes have lost at Purdue, at home to Nebraska and at Indiana.
Iowa and Indiana will meet again in Iowa City on Feb. 19.
Indiana was held to a season-low 50 points in a loss at Wisconsin on Thursday night, but had that many by halftime against Iowa. The Hoosiers finished with 20 assists after having four against Wisconsin.
On the rare occasion in which Indiana missed a shot against the Hawkeyes, the Hoosiers often got the rebound. Indiana scored 23 second-chance points on 20 offensive boards.
Indiana's Derek Elston hit three straight shots, including two 3-pointers, in a run that gave the Hoosiers a 26-18 lead with 11:37 left in the first half. Iowa cut the lead to one point on a basket by Aaron White, but the Hoosiers quickly regrouped. Tom Pritchard scored baskets 16 seconds apart in a run that gave Indiana a 44-36 lead.
The Hoosiers led 54-37 at halftime, their second-highest point total in a half this season. Indiana shot 54 percent and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds. Iowa shot 50 percent but committed 10 turnovers in the first half and was outrebounded 24-11.
A powerful one-handed dunk by Zeller gave the Hoosiers a 65-48 lead.
Iowa rallied and cut the deficit to 67-55 on a dunk by Nelsahn Basabe. Zeller took a break with Indiana leading 72-57. A two-handed putback dunk by Pritchard helped the Hoosiers maintain their lead, and Indiana led 81-64 when Zeller returned. His breakaway dunk increased the lead to 85-64.
The Hoosiers scored their 100th point on a free throw by Oladipo with 2:30 remaining.
Iowa might have scored 100 points too with better rebounding and effort on defense.
"It is not coming together right now," Gatens said. "Our defense on ball is bad, our pick-and-roll defense is bad. We couldn't get stops."

Fujifilm X10
The Fujifilm X10 ($599.95 direct) may look like an older camera on the outside, but it's a purely digital point-and-shoot with some nice features that photographers should appreciate. Along with the X100 and recently announced X-Pro1, the camera is part of Fuji's X series?a group of unique cameras that are aimed at enthusiasts. The X10 is set apart from other point-and-shoots by its larger image sensor, bright optical viewfinder, abundant physical controls, and Raw shooting capability. It doesn't manage to oust the Canon PowerShot S100 ($429.99, 4.5 stars) as our Editor's Choice for high-end compacts, but if you're looking for a zooming compact with a good optical viewfinder, the camera is worth consideration.
Design and Features
From a distance, the X10 could easily be mistaken for a 1970s-era 35mm camera. Its all-black finish and optical viewfinder fit the bill, but the camera's disguise is betrayed by the modern rear LCD and an abundance of button and dials. It's a bit larger than most compact cameras, measuring 2.7 by 4.6 by 2.2 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 12.3 ounces. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 ($499.99, 3.5 stars), which delivers a similar zoom range but lacks an optical finder, is only 2.6 by 4.3 by 1.7 inches and a bit lighter at 9.5 ounces.
Unlike most modern cameras, the X10 lacks a power switch. To turn the camera on, you must remove the lens cap and twist the lens away from its Off position. You also twist the lens to change its focal length?there are no power zoom controls like on other compact cameras. This gives you more control over the zoom action, but also makes the camera a bit awkward to use?especially if you're shooting via the optical viewfinder. Other cameras in this class have optical finders, including the Canon PowerShot G12 ($499.99, 2.5 stars), but they are generally much smaller and don't lend themselves to regular use.
The viewfinder is bright and clear enough for regular use, but it is not without its foibles. It doesn't cover the entirety of the frame, only about 80 percent, so for tightly-composed photos you'll probably want to use the rear LCD. It is also without any sort of information display. There is no focus confirmation, so you'll have to place your trust in the camera's autofocus system. By default, the camera uses a center focusing point, although you can change that manually. If you use something other than center as the point, it's up to you to remember where in the frame the camera is focusing and translate that to a position in the finder.
Placing trust in the autofocus is not something to be worried about?I was able to raise the camera to my eye for quick street shots and the X10 nailed the focus quickly and consistently. There is an option to have the camera make an audible beep when focus is locked, but street shooters are likely to disable this. There is no way to separate the focus confirm beep and the shutter sound clip, which is unfortunate as the desire to have an audible confirmation of focus lock does not go hand-in-hand with that to have the camera play a fake shutter noise when a photo is snapped.
I also found that using the zoom lens and the optical finder together could be a bit awkward. My hand would generally get in the way of the finder when adjusting the focal length, which makes grabbing quick shots difficult. I also inadvertently added fingerprints to the front of the finder when operating the zoom on several occasions, which very noticeably affected its clarity.
The 4x zoom lens is the equivalent of a 28-112mm f/2-2.8 in 35mm photography. It's a very sensible zoom range?although it lacks the telephoto reach needed for sports, birding, and similar applications. Other top-end compacts feature similar zoom ranges and fast lenses, although the Nikon Coolpix P7100 ($499.95, 4 stars) leads the pack with a 7.1x (28-200mm f/2.8-5.6) lens. The camera has a very nice macro mode to allow you to focus on objects that are very close to the lens. Enabling it also enables the rear LCD, as you cannot get accurate framing with the optical finder when shooting on a close object due to parallax. This is true for any camera that has a viewing lens that is offset from its taking lens.
The X10's rear LCD isn't the best in its class. It is 2.8 inches in size, a bit smaller than the 3-inch displays?that are par for the course in this class of camera, but does offer the same 460k dot resolution that is common to the Canon PowerShot S100, Panasonic LX5, and Canon G12. Both the Nikon P7100 and the Samsung TL500 ($449, 3 stars) offer 921k dot screens. The X10's LCD is bright, so you won't have any trouble using it on a sunny day?and the optical finder is there if you're in a situation where glare cannot be avoided?but it's easier to confirm critical focus on a higher-resolution display.
You'll find a number of physical controls on the X10. The top-mounted Mode Dial allows you to toggle between shooting modes, and another dial makes it easy to dial in EV compensation from -2 EV to +2 EV in third-stop increments. The shutter button features a standard thread, which makes it possible to add a soft release button or to use a manually shutter release cable to grab a photo. Rear controls include a 4-Way Command Dial, AE-L/AF-L, and a button to switch from JPG to Raw shooting for a single shot. There is also a standard rear command dial which will adjust aperture in A mode, shutter speed in S mode, and can be used to navigate through menus.
The menu system isn't the most intuitive; in my testing, some of the settings were a bit hard to find. The Raw shooting mode is actually located in the Settings area rather than the Shooting Menu where I'm used to seeing it. Once the initial setup is complete you won't have to spend a lot of time diving into menus?there are enough physical controls so you can avoid that. The X10 also supports a few film emulation modes, including Provia, Velvia, and Astia film stocks as well as a few different black and white shooting modes.
Even though the 2/3-inch image sensor in the X10 is larger than those found in most point-and-shoots, it is smaller than that found in interchangeable lens cameras like the Nikon J1 ($649.95, 3.5 stars), Olympus E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars), and our Editors' Choice, the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars)?all of which are similarly priced to the X10. The main reason to opt for a compact over one of these mirrorless shooters is portability. Larger lenses are required to capture enough light to cover larger image sensors, where a compact camera like the X10 is able to get the job done with a much smaller lens. Canon's recently announced G1 X ($799.99) is set to change this a bit, as its sensor is larger than that of a Micro Four Thirds camera, but the camera itself is only slightly larger than the X10.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and other city officials have begun inspecting damage inside City Hall that was caused by about 50 Occupy protesters who broke in and smashed glass display cases, spray-painted graffiti, and burned the American and California flags.
Saturday's break-in culminated a day of clashes between protesters and police. Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said nearly 400 people were arrested on charges ranging from failure to disperse and vandalism.
At least three officers and one protester were injured.
Quan said Sunday that Occupy protesters have caused an estimated $2 million in vandalism since October. She said the cost to the city related to the Occupy Oakland protests is pegged at about $5 million.
The scene around City Hall was mostly quiet Sunday morning. It's unclear whether protesters will mount another large-scale demonstration on Sunday.

Goldman executives get access to restricted stock (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Top Goldman Sachs Group Inc executives received previously restricted stock awards that are now worth $47.7 million, according to regulatory filings, though the executives are still limited in selling most of their Goldman stock.
Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein, Chief Financial Officer David Viniar, Chief Operating Officer Gary Cohn and top investment banker and vice chairman John Weinberg each received 45,497 shares worth $5.1 million, based on Goldman's closing price of $111.77 on Friday.
Seven other executives each received previously awarded shares worth $2.8 million to $5 million, according to Form 4 filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Among those executives are vice chairmen Michael Evans and Michael Sherwood, as well as Goldman's legal chief, Gregory Palm, its accounting chief, Sarah Smith, and compliance chief Alan Cohen.
The stock awards became unlocked on Wednesday, but the 11 executives did not immediately sell those shares. They did sell an additional $20.2 million worth of Goldman stock at $107.44 apiece to cover tax obligations.
The transactions took place on Wednesday, when executives received access to the previously restricted stock.
Starting in 2009, Wall Street banks began shifting more of their bonus awards into stock that executives are required to hold for multi-year periods in an effort to align incentives with long-term performance.
In 2011, some of those payments started coming due, leaving compensation costs stubbornly high for big investment banks, even as they cut jobs and bonus pools due to weak business.
Last year, Goldman paid $12.2 billion in compensation costs, down 21 percent from 2010, and reduced its payroll by 2,400 jobs. Yet because revenue fell even more, compensation as a percentage of revenue rose to 42.4 percent from 39.3 percent the previous year.

Stocks lowered by mixed economic data
?A brief morning rally pushed the Dow Jones industrial average above its highest closing price since the financial crisis, the Dow closed down 22 points at 12734.?
A brief morning rally pushed the Dow Jones industrial average above its highest closing price since the financial crisis Thursday, but stocks closed lower after mixed economic data tempered traders' optimism.
Skip to next paragraphSolid news on factory orders and strong earnings from U.S. manufacturers highlighted one of the economy's bright spots before the market opened. The Dow and broader indexes turned negative after weaker reports on home sales and future economic growth were released in the late morning.
The Dow and other indexes are still up sharply for the year, and the Dow is near its highest level since May 2008. Traders appear less afraid of spillover damage from the European debt crisis, and data on jobs and manufacturing have been consistently strong.
"With global risk off center stage and attention going back to the fundamentals, this market was ready to explode, which is exactly what it is doing," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist with ING Investment Management.
The government reported early Thursday orders to factories for long-lasting manufactured goods increased in December for the second straight month, and a key measure of business investment rose solidly.
That strong demand was apparent in quarterly earnings reports from U.S. manufacturers. 3M stock closed 1.3 percent higher after its fourth-quarter profit beat Wall Street's estimates.
Caterpillar, the world's biggest heavy equipment maker, rose 2.1 percent, the most of the 30 companies in the Dow, after beating analysts' estimates last quarter. The company expects to do the same this year as global demand remains high.
Stocks traded broadly higher until mid-morning, when the government reported an unexpected drop in new home sales in December, capping the worst year for home sales on records dating to 1963. The decline underscored the housing market's continued drag on the economy.
A private gauge of future economic activity also grew more slowly than expected.
The Dow closed down 22.33 points, or 0.2 percent, at 12,734.63. It had traded up as much as 84.99 points early Thursday. 3M and Caterpillar led the gains.
AT&T dragged the Dow lower, falling 2.5 percent after its earnings missed Wall Street's forecasts. The company remains heavily dependent on Apple's iPhone, which it pays to subsidize, but recently lost its exclusive rights to sell the phone in the U.S.
The Dow is within reach of its post-financial crisis high of 12,810.54, reached in April 2011. The last time it closed higher than that was on May 20, 2008, when it settled at 12,828.68. The Dow's post-crisis high during the trading day was 12,928.45, reached on May 2, 2011.
The Dow is up 4.2 percent so far this year. The Standard & Poor's 500 index and Nasdaq composite average have gained even more.
The Dow would need to rise another 11 percent to get to its record high close of 14,164.53, reached on Oct. 9, 2007.
The S&P 500 closed down 7.63 points, or 0.6 percent, at 1,318.43. It was dragged lower by volatile financial companies and telecommunications firms including AT&T. The Nasdaq shed 13.03 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 2,805.28.
Stocks had their highest close in eight months Wednesday after the Federal Reserve said it plans to keep interest rates extremely low until late 2014 to encourage lending and investment and support the economic recovery.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.93 percent from 1.99 percent late Wednesday. The prospect of more bond-buying by the Fed helped make Treasurys more attractive. A bond's yield falls as demand for it increases.
Among the other U.S. companies making big moves after reporting quarterly earnings:
? Time Warner Cable Inc. rose 7.8 percent after the company reported earnings that were far above analysts' estimates. The national cable TV provider also raised its dividend 17 percent to 56 cents per share and announced plans to buy back more of its own stock.
? United Continental Holdings, the parent company of United and Continental airlines, surged 6.3 percent. The company's fourth-quarter loss narrowed, its adjusted earnings were more than double what analysts had expected and the cost of integrating the two companies fell.
? Netflix soared 22.1 percent, the most of any stock in the S&P 500, after the video streaming and DVD-by-mail company reported a huge gain in customers and a bigger fourth-quarter profit than analysts had expected.
? Colgate-Palmolive rose 1.9 percent after saying it will raise prices in the U.S. for the first time in years to cover higher costs for materials. The company's profit declined last quarter, but core sales in emerging markets were much stronger.

Boeing 4Q profit up as plane deliveries take off (AP)
MINNEAPOLIS ? Quicker deliveries of Boeing's commercial airplanes helped it report a 20-percent jump in fourth-quarter profits, and offset sluggish growth in its defense business.
However, its shares fell because of a weaker 2012 earnings outlook than analysts expected.
Boeing posted net income of $1.39 billion Wednesday, or $1.84 per share. That didn't include a tax benefit of 52 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $1 per share. Revenue was $19.56 billion, also better than expected.
Boeing delivered 128 commercial planes during the quarter, up from 116 a year ago. Profits from commercial planes jumped 56 percent. Revenue rose 31 percent.
Profits from defense rose 6 percent. Revenue rose 4 percent. Defense contractors are just beginning to see what is expected to be a major slowdown in military spending in the U.S. and Europe. Boeing says defense revenue will fall roughly 5 percent in 2012.
Boeing predicted a 2012 profit of $4.05 to $4.25 per share. Analysts had been expecting a profit of $4.90 per share. Not counting 83 cents per share in higher-than-expected pension expense and other one-time items, Boeing expects an adjusted profit of $5.06 to $5.26 per share.
The company forecast revenue of $78 billion to $80 billion. Analysts were expecting $78.45 billion.
Boeing, based in Chicago, says it plans to deliver 585 to 600 commercial planes this year, up from 477 last year. It delivered three of its new 787s last year, and nine of its new 747-8 superjumbo jets. Boeing says revenue from commercial planes will grow at least 31 percent this year.
Shares fell $1.94, or 2.6 percent, to $73.42 in morning trading.

Nadal tops Federer in Australian Open semifinal (AP)
MELBOURNE, Australia ? Rafael Nadal outlasted Roger Federer 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in an Australian Open semifinal on Thursday night, the longtime rivals playing with the intensity normally displayed when meeting in a Grand Slam final.
The stars who met in eight Grand Slam finals were on the same side of the draw for the first time at a major since 2005.
Two weeks ago, Nadal injured his right knee and wasn't sure he'd be able to start the tournament. Now, he can barely believe he's in the final.
"If you tell me that two Sundays ago, I really cannot imagine," Nadal said. "For me, it's a dream to be back in a final of the Australian Open."
Nadal will have the opportunity to win another championship on Sunday night when the Spanish left-hander plays the winner of the semifinal Friday between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
Earlier Thursday, Maria Sharapova overcame Petra Kvitova to advance to the women's final against Victoria Azarenka. Sharapova broke Kvitova's serve in the last game to finish off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory and the third-seeded Azarenka beat defending champion Kim Clijsters 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to set up a Saturday night final at Rod Laver Arena that will decide the No. 1 ranking.
Nadal, who holds a 6-2 edge in Grand Slam finals against Federer, made the key service break in the ninth game of the fourth set, making an incredible cross-court forehand winner from well behind the baseline, then watching as Federer hit a backhand wide to give Nadal a 5-4 lead.
Serving for the match, Nadal moved two points away from the win when Federer sent a backhand long. He won on his second match point when Federer floated a forehand long.
At the end, Nadal smashed a ball up high in the stadium, almost clearing the roof. He then applauded along with the crowd when Federer walked off.
The 25-year-old Spaniard won the 2009 Australian title but lost in the quarterfinals in his next two trips to Melbourne Park. Federer hasn't added to his record 16 Grand Slam titles since he won the 2010 Australian Open.
"I thought Rafa played well from start to finish," Federer said. "It was a tough match physically as well. I'm disappointed, but it's only the beginning of the season. I'm feeling all right, so it's OK."
When the often enthralling play was suspended for 10 minutes late in the second set for an Australian Day fireworks display, Federer seemed to be affected most. Nadal led 5-2 at the time, and Federer lost his serve in the next game to give the Spaniard the set. In all, the Swiss dropped 11 points in a row.
"It's tough, it's not helpful, that's for sure," Federer said of the break for the fireworks. "They told us before, so it was no surprise. But I knew it was a lot of points in a row that I lost."
The capacity, 15,000-strong crowd was evenly split in its support, with the names seeming to blur after the R in rival chants.
Each time somebody called out for Rafa, it was met by a response for Roger. The cheers were just as loud for Nadal's scrambling, sometimes astonishing, passing shots as for Federer's deft winners.
With the players on serve in the second set, Nadal went so far wide on a Federer return that he was near the side wall of the arena. Incredibly, he stretched wide and returned the ball crosscourt for a winner. That set up three break points and Nadal clinched the game to take a 4-2 lead in the second set.
Federer saved a set point in the 11th game of the third set that eventually forced a tiebreaker. But Federer made three unforced errors in the tiebreaker to give Nadal a 6-1 lead, and the Spaniard eventually clinched the set on his last opportunity of five set points.
"Please win the point, that's all," Nadal recalled when asked what he was telling himself at 6-5 in the tiebreaker. "I was very, very nervous at that moment. Losing four set points in a row is tough, especially when you play the toughest in history."
Both players were asked if they bring out the best in each other.
"I don't know if it's true ... it's my assumption," Federer said. "I feel he plays really good against me. He's also got a winning record against me which maybe gives him extra confidence. I think he has a clear plan and he follows that one very well."
Nadal said that's not the case.
"I don't play my best tennis because it's Roger in front, I play my best tennis because I am ready to play my best tennis," Nadal said. "It's true I played a lot of good matches against him during my career ... but I believe that he played a few fantastic matches against me, too."
Clijsters was in the crowd, only hours after her title defense ended. And Ivan Lendl was at Rod Laver Arena for a second night, scouting opponents again as Murray's coach. So were former Australian greats Laver, Ken Rosewall and Pat Rafter.
Sharapova lost to second-ranked Kvitova in the Wimbledon final last year, her first major final since returning from an injury layoff following a shoulder operation in 2008. She has won three majors, but none since the 2008 Australian Open.
"In the third set, I felt she always had the advantage because I was always down on my serve," said Sharapova, who served five double-faults in the third set and 10 in the match. "I just told myself 'You just gotta go for it, don't let her finish off the points like she likes to.'"
Azarenka won the first semifinal after twice recovering from periods when a resurgent Clijsters seemed to have the upper hand, to secure victory in only her second appearance in a major semifinal.
"I felt like my hand is about 200 kilograms and my body is about 1,000 and everything is shaking, but that feeling when you finally win is such a relief. My God, I cannot believe it's over. I just want to cry," Azarenka said as she choked back tears, then buried her face in a towel.
Clijsters is popular in Australia, where she's widely known as "Aussie Kim" after dating Lleyton Hewitt years ago. She had most of the backing from the crowd on the national holiday in what is likely to be her last Australian Open.
Azarenka held her nerve despite the crowd and playing against a proven big-match player. Clijsters has won four majors and has defended a Grand Slam title ? winning the U.S. Open in 2009 and '10. To reach the semifinals, the Belgian saved four match points despite a sprained ankle to beat French Open champion Li Na in the fourth round and beat top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.
"I guess before you all thought I was a mental case," Azarenka said in a courtside interview. "I was just young and emotional. I'm really glad the way I fight, that's the most thing I'm really proud of. I fight for every ball."
Wozniacki will vacate top spot in next week's rankings after her quarterfinal loss, leaving either No. 3 Azarenka and No. 4 Sharapova a chance to move to the top.

Gaultier channels Winehouse, stars shop for Oscars (AP)
PARIS ? The final day of Paris's spring-summer haute couture week saw Jean Paul Gaultier serve up a cigarettes-and-all homage to late singer Amy Winehouse and Valentino show off the dazzling couture work of seamstresses who toiled for thousands of hours to create a lavish white collection.
Lebanese designer Elie Saab produced a fairy tale blockbuster, drawing in Hollywood stars sizing up dresses for Oscar season. But the show also highlighted the importance of the Middle East and Asia in couture finance: Bollywood actresses mixed alongside Arab and Chinese buyers at his show.
Wednesday marked the official debut for couture's first-ever Chinese-born designer: Yiqing Yin, in what was an accomplished and imaginative collection of shaved fur and asymmetrical draping. The couturier's presence on the highly restricted calendar might demonstrate the relaxing of couture rules ? for decades the realm of mainly the Europe-born. Since last year, couture collections have also been shown in Singapore.
With some Western countries facing renewed recession, the apparent opening up might seem business-minded. Many of Yin's clients are from China ? now the world's second economy.
ELIE SAAB
Elie Saab stole into the tower and gave Rapunzel a gift to dazzle any passing prince ? a new gown that shimmers royally.
Models with long rope-like ponytails in luminous shantung silk gowns blossomed at Wednesday's showing of the Lebanese designer's collection.
The show was made up almost exclusively of delicate ball gowns, painted with pastels. Some other collections were heavy on greens, but this time Saab gave the color a full-blown crowning. Sea and pale green full-length gowns danced regally with flower paillettes.
One sweeping sea green robe in tulle embroidered with sequins featured a plunging decollete and dramatic double skirts.
Judging by the front row turnout, you could guess the Oscars are around the corner, along with the quest for best gown.
The designer's lavish show was a natural choice for stars eyeing up potentials ? like Berenice Bejo, basking in the attention gained by her nomination for best supporting actress for "The Artist."
"I love Elie Saab. It's so beautiful," Bejo said of the fairy tale dresses. "I wear him all the time."
Shimmering green would be a good match with the Oscars red carpet.
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER
It was back to black for Jean Paul Gaultier whose collection Wednesday was an ode to the life, style and smoking-habits of late music star Amy Winehouse.
Like the British singer ? who died at age 27 last year ? the show's concept was hard-edged femininity, dressed up with Gaultier's signature touch of androgyny.
To a barbershop rendition of Winehouse's songs, the creations channeled her eccentric mix of floaty silhouettes, silk nightgowns and tight bustiers.
Yards of revealing lace, corsets, huge beehive hair and, of course, the iconic pointy bra, including one with inset crystals, dazzled spectators.
In the front row, French icon Catherine Deneuve, who appeared in lingerie in the film "Belle de Jour," seemed to enjoy it.
Bustiers in black and white with impossibly small waists and fitted short dresses in satin were combined with Teddy Boy jackets and dark masculine lapels. A floaty silhouette would be reined in by a rock-and-roll belt, waistcoats hung down over exposed bras, and lace covered reptile skin garments.
Gaultier confessed backstage that although he had never met the star, their "styles had always been similar."
But the designer still had his eye on the trends: one beautiful full circle dress in pink tulle and black lace ensured the show kept pace with the in-vogue 1950s shapes that have filled the catwalk this season.
In the finale, all the models filed past in sweeping black silk veils, a bittersweet statement for a show (and life) filled with fun.
YIQING YIN
She-wolves whimpered as designer Yiqing Yin introduced the svelte world of their more glamorous cousins, the she-foxes.
The pack of journalists ensured the heat was on for the Chinese-born couturier to impress in her first official haute couture showing.
And Yin didn't fail: introducing a new fascinating couture technique of fox fur shaving ? alongside a skilled demonstration of embroidery and her signature draping.
Patchy silver and blue frost fox fur was meshed onto tulle in several pieces, serving as a second skin next to sexily exposed bare flesh.
A raw elemental mood defined the show.
In one top, silk and metal gauze blurred the face of a fierce old man sculpted in sisal netting, as if tousled by wind.
Ice swept through another piece: a sparkling jacket, embroidered with Swarovski crystals.
At one point, the young designer had the audience gasping in delight, or perhaps for breath, when a model in a full body veil of powder blue silk with assorted skirts appeared like a giant air bubble.
The designer still has a lot to prove, but this collection might have blown her some of the way.
VALENTINO
Is life just a dream? It certainly seemed to be in the diaphanous, white and haunting spring-summer collection from Valentino that ended Paris' haute couture week.
Models in sparkling lace choker collars and long smocked taffeta dresses appeared like ghosts, floating through the show's neoclassical venue.
For fans of couture, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli's creations were an instant hit. But they weren't the real stars of the show.
The program notes ensured that the "petites mains" ? the old Italian seamstresses, many of whom have been with the house for decades ? were credited.
One strapless gown with embroidered beads and adornments, it read, took 850 hours to make. Another 1,200 hours. Even without that detail, it didn't fail to astonish revelers as it swept past with its long train.
A full dress in soft-white invisible tulle was perfected with small lace gloves that wrapped around just two fingers.
The show's only downside was its dependence on white ? something that was broken up in the last spring-summer collection with flashes of scarlet.
"Yes, there is no red, and it was a complete accident," said Chiuri in a strong Italian accent. "I woke up this morning and realized: Oh dear, I forgot the red!"
Paris' ready-to-wear fall-winter collections begin on February 28.

Coulter: ???With Newt Gingrich you throw out the baby and keep the bath water??? [VIDEO] (Daily Caller)
On a Sunday morning appearance on ?Fox & Friends,??conservative columnist Ann?Coulter explained why Romney fell short in the South Carolina GOP presidential primary, blaming the priorities of South Carolina voters for Gingrich?s success.
?Apparently, South Carolinians would rather have the emotional satisfaction of a snotty remark toward the president than to beat Obama in the fall,? Coulter, the author of ?Demonic: How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America,??said. ?We saw it in the debates when Gingrich would say things that didn?t really make sense. That is what you usually associate with Democrats, which I described in my last book, ?Demonic,? how mobs behave.?
Some of what Gingrich has said might appear to make sense, she said, but should be analyzed more closely.
?Something that sounds like it makes sense like, ?Mitt Romney doesn?t have influence over his super PAC ? that makes you wonder if he?ll have influence as president,???she continued. ?How many times does Mitt Romney have to say it is illegal for a candidate to have influence on the super PAC. It is not, interestingly, though, for a president to have influence. So it makes no sense if you think about it for all of three seconds, but it sounds like it makes sense. It is just like what you get from liberals most of the time and the cheers and yahoos, and that is what we kept getting from this audience.?
Coulter, who has been a Romney supporter since New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he would not be seeking the Republican nomination,?was asked if Romney should change his strategy now that he suffered a defeat in South Carolina, and perhaps go on the offensive with ?fire in the belly.? (RELATED:?Christie on Gingrich?s past: ?Newt Gingrich has embarrassed the party? [VIDEO])
?No, he?s doing fine,? Coulter said. ?This is not going be the electorate in the fall. I am pretty sure we?ll get everyone who voted for McCain ? since no one voted for McCain because we liked McCain ? it was to stop Obama. We have those voters. Now you have to get people who voted for Obama and having a candidate who goes out and calls Obama a Kenyan colonialist, that is not what you need. And at the same time, with Newt Gingrich you get the name calling for the president ? very popular with the tea party crowd and South Carolina, not so popular with independents. He won?t put a fence on the border but wants amnesty for illegals. He took $1.6 million from Freddie Mac. But you know, he attacked Paul Ryan?s plan on Social Security. So with Newt Gingrich, you throw out the baby and keep the bath water.?
Coulter suggested that South Carolina voters ignoring Gingrich?s marriage baggage was the product of the state perhaps ?going back to its Democratic roots.?
?I think South Carolina is going back to its Democratic roots,? she said. ?I mean, to not care about that, that?s the position of the Democratic Party. The arguments I hear on behalf of Gingrich on this is we heard for two solid years about Bill Clinton. I never thought I would hear conservative make those arguments. I promise you, if Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum have cheated on two wives, that we know ? the open marriage thing is the only thing he contests. We know he cheated on two wives. I wouldn?t supporting Mitt Romney. I wouldn?t support Rick Santorum.?

Intel 4Q earnings rise 6 percent, top St. estimate (AP)
NEW YORK ? Intel Corp., the world's largest chip-maker, on Thursday said its profit rose 6 percent in the latest quarter, topping analyst expectations, even as hard-drive shortages held back PC makers' chip orders.
The Santa Clara, Calif., company also provided a forecast for the new quarter that matched analyst expectations.
Intel's results, like Apple's in recent quarters, have benefited from the economic surge in China and other developing countries, where many people are buying PCs for the first time. Intel processors go into about four out of five PCs built.
CEO Paul Otellini expects China to continue to drive Intel's sales, noting on a conference call with analysts that the country's is now the world's largest PC market, even though just 35 percent of Chinese households have PCs. In the U.S., 90 percent of households have PCs.
At the same time, growing Internet use is driving demand for servers, where Intel processors are now the No. 1 choice as well.
However, Intel had to scale back sales expectations in the middle of the quarter because of disastrous floods in Thailand, which knocked out factories that produce hard drives and hard drive components. Computer makers cut production, and chip purchases, because of the parts shortages.
The latest results were at the high end of Intel's mid-quarter forecast range.
Fourth-quarter net income was $3.36 billion, or 64 cents per share, up from $3.18 billion, or 56 cents per share, a year earlier.
Excluding some one-time charges related to acquisitions, earnings totaled 68 cents per share, beating the 61-cent estimate of analysts polled by FactSet
Revenue rose 21 percent to $13.9 billion from $11.5 billion. Analysts were expecting $13.7 billion.
Excluding last year's acquisitions of security company McAfee Inc. and a unit of Infineon AG that makes modem chips for cellphones, Intel's annual revenue grew 15 percent from 2010.
The company says it expects between $12.3 billion and $13.3 billion in first-quarter revenue, straddling the analyst forecast of $12.8 billion.
Intel is also gearing up for its biggest advertising campaign since 2003. This spring, it will promote "ultrabooks," which are thin, light and powerful laptops in the vein of the MacBook Air. Intel has prodded PC makers to produce such models, and they've responded enthusiastically.
While Intel is stronger than ever on the PC side, it's facing a new threat in the form of cellphone-style chips made by Texas Instruments Inc., Qualcomm Corp., Nvidia Corp. and others. These chips have taken the step from powering cellphones to tablets, and could be encroaching on Intel's PC market next year.
To fight back, Intel is moving its chips into cellphones. Last week, it announced that Lenovo Corp. will be making an Intel-powered smartphone for China, and Motorola Mobility Holdings Corp. of the U.S. has committed to using Intel chips for smartphones and tablets.
Intel shares added 19 cents to $25.82 in extended trading, after the release of the results. Shares had risen 24 cents to $25.63 on Thursday.
For the full year, Intel had net income $12.9 billion on $54 billion in revenue. That was up from $11.5 billion on $43.6 billion in revenue in 2010.

PFT: Jets owner praises Holmes, says WR will return
After the home teams went 4-0 in the wild-card round, I decided to ride that wave of bad hospitality, and I picked the home teams to win in the division round.
But for the Giants? 17-point win over the Packers, I would have had a perfect weekend.? Rosenthal, who picked both the Packers and Saints to advance, was 2-2.
So, yes, I won.? For a change.
This week, I agonized over both games.? Tempted to flip a coin, I probably would have been better off if I did.
Not just this weekend, but all year.
Ravens at Patriots
Florio?s take:? Yes, the Baltimore offense looked sluggish against the Texans.? During the regular season, however, the Texans had one of the best defenses in the league.? The Patriots, in sharp contrast, had one of the worst.? Still, can the Ravens muster at least one more point than the New England offense will score?? The internal offense-vs.-defense strife in Baltimore seems to be real, and it could lead to an ugly confrontation on the sidelines if the Pats jump out to an early lead and the Ravens can?t respond.? Also, the Pats? defense quietly is improving.? Throw in the fact that the Patriots would love to give owner Robert Kraft something about which to feel good as he continues to mourn his wife?s passing (Myra Kraft?s initials remain on their jerseys), Tom Brady?s memory of a home thrashing two years ago from the Ravens, and a burning desire by Brady and Bill Belichick to finally get that fourth championship, and it?s hard to envision the Patriots losing.
Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Ravens 20.
Rosenthal?s take: This game comes down to two questions. Is the Ravens defense more dominant than the Patriots offense? After watching Houston?s running game push Baltimore around last week, I?m rolling with the Patriots there. Terrell Suggs disappears too often. New England?s tight ends are too hard to defend.? Second question: Does the good Joe Flacco show up this week? All season, I?ve thought a great quarterback would take the Patriots out in the playoffs. New England doesn?t have to face a great quarterback in the AFC. The health of Patrick Chung, Brandon Spikes, Dane Fletcher, and the rest of the Patriots no-names all help make the New England defense competent enough.
Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 31, Ravens 27.
Giants at 49ers
Florio?s take:? The Giants are the best team remaining, with a high-powered offense to go with a staunch defense.? And I?m inclined to pick them to win, in part because I?ve picked them to lose twice in the playoffs and in part because a clash between the Giants and Patriots in the Super Bowl would generate enormous interest and ratings and page views.? But there?s something intangible, and special, about the 49ers and coach Jim Harbaugh.? All week long, I believed I?d pick the Giants, and that then the 49ers would win.? With rain likely to make it harder for the Giants? passing game to fire on all cylinders, look for that hard-hitting San Fran defense and a potent-when-it-needs-to-be offense to find a way.? Yes, the Giants are the better team.? But the 49ers, I believe, will have more points on the scoreboard when the game is finally over.
Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Giants 21.
Rosenthal?s take: Eli Manning has the fourth quarter reputation, but Alex Smith has the seven fourth quarter comebacks. New York?s offensive line is a weakness that hasn?t been exposed the last two weeks, but it will show up on Sunday.? San Francisco can get more consistent pressure on Eli Manning with their front seven and they?ll have the more consistent running game. Counting on Eli to keep converting beautiful low percentage third-and-long throws is a difficult way to win week after week. The 49ers magic will continue.
Rosenthal?s pick: 49ers 24, Giants 20.

Kaspersky ONE Universal Security
The typical security suite comes with licenses to install on three Windows-based PCs. If you have two PCs and a Mac, you're out of luck. If you have four PCs you have to buy enough licenses for six. With Kaspersky ONE Universal Security ($79.95/year direct for three devices) you can apply protection to any three devices be they PC, Mac, smartphone, or tablet. Got more gadgets? For $99.95/year you can protect five devices; $149.95/year brings the total up to ten. The boxed product sold in retail stores is the five-device edition. At the moment Kaspersky is offering $20 off for any of the packages.
When you insert the CD (PC or Mac) from the boxed edition, it opens a window from which you can install the products or view their user guides. One click starts the process of installing protection for the PC or Mac, and the user guides explain how to install tablet and smartphone security.
That's all there is to Kaspersky ONE. There's no online management console like what you get with McAfee All Access ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 4.5 stars). It's a software bargain bundle with flexible licensing that lets you choose which devices to protect.
Protection Components
Kaspersky ONE lets you install Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 3.5 stars) to protect each of your PCs. This suite has a good antivirus and parental control components as well as an unusual and effective firewall that manages program control without bothering the user. In testing, its antispam and antiphishing components lagged, but overall it's a good security suite.
Note that the suite's price is the same as the price of Kaspersky ONE for three licenses. A ten-license Kaspersky ONE package is less than twice that price, so it's a good deal if you need to protect a lot of PCs.
Mac users don't get suite-specific features like spam filtering and parental control, just antivirus. Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac will scan for viruses, fend off malware attacks, and warn you away from dangerous URLs. It even removes viruses that target Windows. Yes, your Mac is safe from those, but you wouldn't want to accidentally transfer one to a PC.
Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 ($29.95/year direct) offers varying levels of protection depending on the phone's OS. Sorry, iPhone users. Like McAfee All Access ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 4.5 stars), Kaspersky ONE doesn't protect iPhones. It offers anti-theft and spam filtering for Blackberry devices and adds antivirus and privacy protection for Android devices. Symbian and Windows Phone 7 devices also get firewall protection, data encryption, and parental controls
Kaspersky ONE protects your Android tablet devices with Kaspersky Tablet Security ($19.99/year direct). This tool uses the same underlying technology as the smartphone version. It's formatted for the tablet interface, naturally, and it omits smartphone-specific features like blocking unwanted calls. The company plans to add anti-theft features like remote locate, lock, and wipe later this year.
A Growing Market
With the widespread adoption of non-PC devices, protection across device types is a growing need. Quite a few other vendors have released or announced products similar to Kaspersky ONE.
The $99.95 Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security Premium Edition lets you protect three PCs with Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2012 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 3.5 stars), three Macs with Trend Micro Smart Surfing for Mac, and three Android devices with Trend Micro Mobile Security Personal Edition ($29.95/year direct). It also comes with 50GB of hosted online backup through Trend Micro SafeSync.
Bitdefender Sphere, also $99.95, is quite similar to the Trend Micro product. It lets you install Bitdefender Total Security 2012 on three PCs, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac on three Macs, and Bitdefender Mobile Security for Android on three Android devices.
Trend Micro and Bitdefender offer no support for non-Android mobile devices. If your device collection doesn't match their fixed three-apiece license lineup, you might need two packages. Kaspersky is decidedly more flexible.
Details about Norton One are still hazy. Symantec has said that it will include a single management console, which is good, and users will have the option to add licenses above the not-yet-stated base number for "a small additional fee."
McAfee All Access ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 4.5 stars) remains our Editors' Choice for multi-device security bundles. It already has a single online management console like what Norton plans. Users aren't limited to a specific number of licenses for each device type. In fact, there's no limit at all; you can install McAfee All Access on every device you own. And while its Mozy-powered backup licenses aren't unlimited, you'd be hard pressed to use up as many as McAfee offers.

Google Android's Amazing Adventures in Space (ContributorNetwork)
COMMENTARY | Because Google's Android operating system is open-source -- meaning all the programming code is put up on the Internet for people to use for free -- it's used by many hobbyists, and even researchers, for their own purposes.
An example of the former? CyanogenMod, the custom version of Android that people are using to try to bring Ice Cream Sandwich to the Nook Color and Kindle Fire. And an example of the latter involves some neat experiments a few Google engineers tried ... along with a project at NASA.
Yes, that is the curvature of Earth
In the video posted on the Google Mobile Blog, that is. A handful of enterprising friends on the Google campus got together and created a series of high-altitude balloons, which would take sensor payloads (and Android action figures) up to 100,000 feet above the Earth's surface. At this altitude, the horizon began to curve downwards, and the sky appeared black and star-filled.
The then-new Nexus S and its "great set of embedded sensors" were used for the experiments, along with a set of proprietary Google apps like Google Maps and Google Sky Map (to identify constellations). The phones were secured in foam coolers, and the Android miniatures and plush toys were attached in various ways. Each balloon popped once it got to a certain altitude, but fortunately there was no littering: Each payload's descent was tracked by GPS, and they were all recovered afterward.
Real NASA Androids
No, they aren't the robot seen in the 80's movie Space Camp. They're SPHERES, or Synchronized Position, Hold, Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites. These are tiny, spherical robots developed by MIT, about the size and shape of a blocky bowling ball, which let NASA researchers experiment with programming them to fly in zero-gravity and avoid obstacles.
On the Google Nexus YouTube channel, Google interviews the NASA engineers who use the Nexus S smartphone to control modern SPHERES. According to engineer DW Wheeler, "Android is easy to program ... and we needed to make a lot of customizations that are easier to make with Android." The app used by NASA to analyze the phones' sensor data is open-source too, and is have had their hardware modified to use a AA battery instead of the standard lithium-ion pack, plus they had their GSM antenna removed to reduce interference with the space vehicles' systems. The phones still use Wi-Fi, however.
