The British four-piece knocked The Military Wives Choir off the top spot with their track which has been gradually climbing the charts since October.
The band's appearance on the X Factor final last month is said to be responsible for the track's eventual success.
Surprisingly, Paradise is only their second number one single - their first was in 2008 with Viva La Vida.
Xtra Factor host Olly Murs secured this week's number two with Dance With Me Tonight and Flo Rida's Good Feeling reached number three.
The Military Wives, formed by Gareth Malone, dropped to four as Rihanna and Calvin Harris took fifth place with We Found Love.
Meanwhile, singer Ed Sheeran topped the Official Albums Chart with his debut release +.
It has also been revealed that Rihanna is hoping for a duet with Chris Martin at the Brits next month amid rumours that the award show bosses are planning to get the two chart toppers together.
The S&M singer - who collaborated with Coldplay for their track Princess Of China - told The Sun: 'I think Chris Martin is a special guy.
'His songwriting is just beautiful and I am a huge fan.
'If they want me to sing with Coldplay, I will be waiting for the call. I'd love to perform with them.'
