To the Tune of $30-50 million!
I’m telling you, autobiographies of celebs are SO HOT RIGHT NOW … in the wake of Morrissey‘s very successful Autobiography and news that autobiographies are on the way from Courtney Love and Jennifer Lopez, we learn today that a bidding war is underway for the publication rights of an autobiography written by actress Angelina Jolie. While news that publishing houses are interested in her book isn’t all that surprising, rumors of how much they are willing to pay are. According to The Daily Star, Angelina might make somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million dollars upon delivery of her autobiography. Wow.
At least three US publishers are locked in a battle for the rights to her autobiography. A source at one confirmed: “Whoever gets her will be sitting on a gold mine. “Her book is guaranteed to top the bestseller lists in virtually every country on the planet and even an advance of that size would be recouped within weeks.” The 38-year-old Oscar-winning actress, mother-of-six and United Nations goodwill ambassador has told friends she is ready to reveal all in her memoir. A close pal said: “She has always wanted to do this and believes the time is now right.” The friend added that since Jolie announced she had undergone a double mastectomy in February “she has never known such peace and fulfilment in her life. There are demons in her past but she is in a place mentally and spiritually where she feels comfortable enough to write about them honestly and put them in context. “No issues – apart from those that might damage her children’s privacy – will be taboo.” The astonishing bidding war has already hit an unheard-of $50million, which equates to about £31million, according to our publishing insider in New York. This is more than three times the advance of £8.7million paid by Simon & Schuster in April to former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her second autobiography. Her husband, ex-President Bill Clinton, banked £20million for his 2004 autobiography My Life but Jolie’s advance would dwarf every other deal of recent years. Hers is a mind-boggling £30million more than the £1.2million advance fellow actress Demi Moore, 50, has agreed with Harper Collins for her autobiography. LA-based media analyst Mike Raia said yesterday: “Angelina is far and away the biggest female celebrity in the world. There are tens of millions of fans out there and every one would be a prospective buyer of her memoir.
30 to 50 million … for a book? Look, I get that Angelina is famous but I personally don’t think her book is worth that much. That said, I can completely believe that this much money might be thrown at her for a juicy tell-all book. I can’t say that I’m not curious about the kinds of revelations that Ange might make in her book, should it ever get published. Would you like to read Angelina‘s autobiography? I’m guessing these publishing houses are hoping the answer is yes because if Ange really does make this much money for her memoirs, they’re gonna hafta sell a LOT of books to recoup their investment. $50 mil. Can you believe it?
