You'll Wish You Had a Reason to Make This DIY Magnet Vacuum

Having to sweep up thousands of tiny metal shavings is admittedly a pretty uncommon chore. But doing it by using a super powerful neodymium magnet to just suck it all up and drop it in a box looks like such a freakin' blast. I'd take that over washing dishes any day.

Yahoo adds Rockmelt to its stable of acquisitions

Yahoo adds Rockmelt to its stable of acquisitions

The Yahoo acquisition train just keeps on rolling! Rockmelt, the social browser news portal social content discovery service will be joining a growing cadre of properties that Marissa Mayer has snatched up. The platform, which seems to straddle the line between Pinterest and StumbleUpon, focuses on personalization and social networking as a way to highlight and serve up content it believes you'll want to read or watch. Yahoo, especially through its homepage portal, has always been about serving up content, and the expectation is that Rockmelt will help the company better hone its understanding of you and what you love. The announcement post makes it clear that Yahoo plans to actually integrate Rockmelt's technology with its existing platform, though, we're gonna have to wait a bit longer to see exactly what that marriage may look like. Rockmelt will shut down its existing apps and services on August 31st this year.

Uruguay vote moves the country towards legal cannabis

Could the US government be losing support in the global war on drugs? A year after some Latin American countries officially discussed alternatives to prohibition, Uruguay has moved to allow the production, sale and distribution of cannabis.

The new legislation, which has made it through one house of parliament in Uruguay, has been described by President Jos? Mujica as a "cutting-edge experiment".

If passed by the upper house, the laws will allow registered users to buy up to 40 grams a month from a pharmacist, grow up to six plants at home, or grow up to 99 plants as part of a "cannabis club" made up of between 15 and 45 members.

Uruguay has seen increases in crime associated with illegal drugs, particularly cocaine. According to the US Department of State, the drug problem continues there despite "concerted and consistent government efforts to combat these trends", including increased arrests and drug seizures. Mujica says the legislation aims to bring an existing market into the "light of day" and stop it from "corrupting everything".

"They are doing it for the same reason the US stopped alcohol prohibition [in the 1930s]," says David Nutt at Imperial College London. "To reduce organised crime and achieve tax revenue for the country."

The move comes hot on the heels of two US states legalising the production and distribution of cannabis and New Zealand creating a legal market for new designer drugs.

Global drug prohibition is unravelling in front of us, says Alex Wodak, a doctor and drug and alcohol expert from Sydney, Australia. He says the moves in the states of Colorado and Washington, and now in Uruguay appear to breach the 1998 UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and maybe also the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and will embolden other Latin American countries and other US States to consider similar moves.

"All this is coming about because it is now inescapable that global drug prohibition has been ineffective, counter-productive and very expensive," says Wodak. He notes that in Mexico alone, more than 60,000 people have been killed in an ongoing drug war, leading to popular doubts about prohibition.

But don't buy a ticket to Uruguay hoping to buy some legal weed. Only Uruguayans will be allowed to buy the stuff, part of an attempt to avoid attracting cannabis tourism.

Explosion in Syrian city of Homs kills 40: monitoring group

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Forty people were killed and at least 120 people were wounded in an explosion at a weapons cache in the central Syrian city of Homs on Thursday, a group opposed to President Bashar al-Assad said.

The explosion occurred in the south-eastern district of Wadi al-Dhahab, which the army has taken over, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The group has a network of sources in the opposition and state security forces.

The Observatory said the casualties were soldiers and civilians and that some of the wounded were in a critical condition.

Published 59 minutes and 30 seconds ago Last updated 57 minutes and 30 seconds ago

METAIRIE, La. ? A woman who could become the NFL's first female official is training at New Orleans Saints training camp this week.

Sarah Thomas, who lives near Jackson, Miss., is a former college basketball player who started officiating high school games at age 23 and says she never dreamed then that she could become a candidate to officiate NFL games.

Now 40-years old and with three children, she has been officiating college football in Conference USA since 2007, is a member of the NFL's Officiating Development Program and a finalist to become a permanent NFL official. She arrived at Saints camp Thursday and will train there Friday and during Saturday's scrimmage.

She has trained at Saints camp in previous years, and Saints coach Sean Payton says she does "a great job."

E-Commerce Platform StackSocial Redesigns Site, Expands To Gaming And Design Products

homepage_headerStackSocial, an e-commerce platform that?provides its users with discounts and special offers on software and hardware, has launched its redesigned site to display increased inventory and?help users discover products more easily.?CEO Josh Payne tells me in the coming weeks the company will implement more community features, such as the ability to "want" or "heart" a product, as well as?add gaming and design products to its catalogue. While there are several other services that offer deals through bundling, such as NimbleCommerce and AppSumo, StackSocial is focused specifically on technology. This specific niche is especially handy for reaching a larger consumer base through related publisher partners. Payne says he expects to see sales from partners reach 80 percent in the near future. Several publisher partners are also focused on gaming and design, which explains the expansion into selling those products.

Realty USA pioneer and basketball coach Chris Schmid dies

Courtesy of the Schmid family

Christopher Schmid, former president of Realty USA and Union College basketball coach.

Christopher Schmid, the former president of Realty USA and college basketball coach who was a mentor to countless people in the Albany, NY region and is considered a pioneer in the local real estate industry, has died.

Schmid died late Tuesday night, July 30, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady surrounded by his family, said his son, Andre.

He was 79 and had cancer.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.

News of Schmid?s death traveled fast today within the real estate community, as people mourned the loss of a man they said was a successful businessman with a gentle touch, someone who knew how to get the best out of those he met and was willing to help whenever he could.

?He was a coach at heart,? said Frank Barbera Sr., who teamed up with him developing land and building homes after Schmid sold the Realty USA franchise in 2000. ?He could get someone to achieve more than they would on their own.?

?He wasn?t tough,? Barbera added. ?He was a fair businessman. He could see both sides of a transaction. He wouldn?t try to exact the most out of a deal.?

Schmid lived in Clifton Park and is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beryl; a sister, Gerda Carmichael; two children, Andre Schmid of Clifton Park and Heidi Gaudiano of California; and five grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by two children.

"He was still, at 79, as enthusiastic about doing business as he ever was," said Ken Raymond, principal at Prime Cos. in Cohoes, which runs the local Coldwell Banker franchise and other businesses. "Everything was not for him, but for his family and children. He was still in the game, and enjoyed it. I'm honored to have known him."
