?We keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new things, because we?re curious and curiousity keeps leading us down new paths.? ? Walt Disney

Several years ago, I attended the Upper CLASS professional speakers? and writers? training in Connecticut. The founder of CLASS, Florence Littauer, and her team critiqued each woman as she gave her presentation in front of our small group, praising her for what was good and giving her tips for how to improve it.

The weekend was encouraging, motivating, and inspiring. We were treated to delicious, elegant, home-cooked meals prepared by our hostess and her husband, were helped with a mission statement and a logo for our websites by Florence?s daughter, Marita, and were given a private consult with the great, legendary speaker/author Florence Littaeur.

It was one of the most powerful ministry/business times I?ve ever had in my life. Before we left to go home, Florence surprised and blessed each of us with a Curious George stuffed animal (pictured above), which I? keep on my office desk and cherish. Florence told us to always be curious, always learn new things each day.

It?s important to learn new things each day ? and then do things with what we?ve learned.

Leadership and organizational expert Stephen R. Covey, whose book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People sold more than 20 million copies, said, ??to learn and not to do is really not to learn. To know and not to do is really not to know.?

Here are 8 practical tips for learning new things:

• Be teachable. Glean from others? experience and those who are ahead where you want to be. Hire a business, finance, health/fitness, writing, or speaking coach or mentor ? people who can pour into your life and help you personally grow.

• Ask questions of your grandparents, family members, elderly neighbors, other senior citizens. They have a lifetime of wisdom to share with you and can tell you their mistakes to help you avoid the same ones.

• Learn in multiple ways ? Learning styles are visual, auditory (hearing), kinesthetic (hands-on), a combination. Instead of just listening to a podcast, rehearse the new information visually and verbally. The more regions of the brain that store data about a subject, the more interconnection there is in the brain. God gave us a brain and He wants us to use it, to learn, to grow, to be all He created us to be!

• Write your thoughts down with pen and paper, on your computer, or record them on your smart phone. Jot down or record those ideas that come in the middle of the night or the first thing in the morning, that you don?t want to forget. Make to-do lists with pen and paper, getting quiet before God and letting Him schedule your day. Prioritize and schedule your life.

• Clean and organize your surroundings -your home, your desk, your car. When your environment is chaotic, you will feel that way inside. Your mind will be cluttered when your desk is. File important papers, organize folders, have tubs, baskets, or boxes for writing utensils, cords and charges, sticky notes. Get rid of the debris and clutter to make room for more creative ideas to flow and creative work to be accomplished.

• Eat or take Smart Fats (Omega 3?s) in capsule form (the purest form, and that are free of mercury). Omega 3?s improve memory, calm ADHD and hyperactivity, and can even help you lose weight.

• Exercise. Exercise can help memory and learning. Women ages 60 to 75, who walked briskly for an hour a day, showed a 25% higher scores in cognitive ability than women who just stretched and didn?t push their limits. (Resource: www.howtolearn.com/start/52-instant-learning-tips) If we want to be in better health and learn more and faster by the time we are that age, then we need to start taking care of ourselves now with healthy eating, learning new things, and exercise! The dentate gyrus is a region of the brain critical for retaining long term memory for facts and events. Exercise can target the dentate gyrus. • Do something you?ve never done before. Go horseback riding, take swimming lessons, ride a hot air balloon, take a foreign language class, enroll in a college course, try parasailiing (just once for me, thank you very much!) or parachuting, take a trip overseas. Get out of your comfort zone. Meeting new people, trying new ethnic foods, visiting a new place will expand your horizons and will enhance your learning. Do these things, even if you feel afraid. It will be liberating.

Body-Image Innovator Tiffany Stewart on Preventing Eating Disorders

?How do you feel about your body?? That is the question research psychologist Tiffany Stewart asked women and girls in launching a new website designed to prevent eating disorders and other health problems. To give voice to all those who suffer silently with bad body image, Stewart, the director of Louisana State University?s Behavior Technology Laboratory, posted the most poignant answers on Emerge. That?s the name of her burgeoning website. At the same time, this Baton Rouge researcher started developing an array of high-tech tools informed by this and other cutting-edge research on body dissatisfaction to help end the silent epidemic.

For a low-tech gal like me who has yet to trade in her calendar for a smartphone, Stewart?s high-tech tools for bolstering body image are challenging to comprehend. But you don?t need to be computer savvy to appreciate Stewart?s innovations. She?s using smartphone apps and other popular technology to do what she did as a director of an eating disorder inpatient unit ? empower young people to shift their focus from unrealistic appearance ideals toward health and well-being.

To that end, this resourceful researcher has stepped away from the academic track to co-found Body Evolution Technologies, a digital media company dedicated to furthering research and commercial efforts in body image, eating disorder and weight-management technology. Given the success Stewart has had deploying such tools to American soldiers far and wide to prevent obesity and stem other bad habits, her new venture holds promise.

If you watch Stewart?s inspirational Body Image Project video, you?ll see why I felt compelled to track down and chat up this scientist turned entrepreneur. What follows are questions and answers from our recent phone interview.

Q. You?re a gal who wears a lot of hats: clinical psychologist, researcher, cofounder of a high-tech company, yoga instructor. Set me straight: Which hats are you currently wearing?

A. I?m a scientist first and foremost, as well as a clinical psychologist. Now I find myself an entrepreneur. My mission is to bring scientific tools to the people who need them most. So many things are developed in science that get great results but stay in the academic realm, like programs for the prevention of eating disorders. The work I do is dedicated to translating scientific tools into popular formats that can engage young people to change their health behaviors ? their eating, exercise, body image and self-worth.

Q. You?ve been working on body image and eating issues for the last decade. What got you interested in this field?

A. When I was treating severe patients with chronic eating disorders, I realized that, when people recover, they still struggle quite a bit. A driving force is the difference between ?surviving? and ?thriving.? The definition of surviving is living another day. Thriving means growing, evolving. There?s way more out there than obsessing about how we look and being extreme about health behaviors, either by doing too much or not doing enough. There?s balance to be acquired. In that balance, we thrive. We called our website Emerge to get at the thriving idea.

Q. Any personal body image or eating issues fueling your efforts?

A. I was a competitive gymnast for 10-12 years. Later on, struggling with severe injuries [that forced me to retire], I developed a much deeper relationship with my body than just evaluating it for appearance. The assumption that thin is healthier is completely wrong. Between my own experience as a gymnast, being injured, valuing function and [freedom from] pain, plus working with severe patients ? all these things combined drive me.

Q. Why did you choose high-tech over academia?

A. A very high percentage of college students engage in some sort of eating-disorder behavior. You find a lot of dieting and people trying things like vomiting, over-exercise, diet pills ? While none of those [behaviors] are a full-blown eating disorder, they?re certainly prepping people to have one. Those are the young people we?re trying to affect.

As a [former yoga instructor], I try to keep technology at a certain place. I?m not addicted to my phone, and I don?t stare at my iPod all the time. At the same time, this is what young people are doing. I?m not suggesting that technology will solve all our problems, but I am suggesting that getting prevention tools into the hands of people who need them before a problem develops might stop it from fully developing.

Q. I first heard about you through The Body Image Project. Can you explain that project and how it relates to your current work?

A. In a nutshell, The Body Image Project was a way to start a meaningful conversation about body image. Basically, I went out and interviewed all sorts of people about body image ? not just about body size, but hair, face, skin, functional limitations, all these things. I wanted to show all different angles on body image by first, producing stories, then getting people to respond [post their own stories on the website].

Q. In addition to The Body Image Project, you?ve also got apps [applications or downloadable programs for mobile devices], and the first one is Body Image Voice. Can you explain how this app works in plain English?

A. Given the relevance of body image as a health factor, and the fact that the majority of the general population struggles with body image in some way, we see an incredible opportunity for mobile programs that can measurably improve health behaviors. We called it [this first app] the Voice because we want people to use their voice. The media throws unrealistic ideals at us and we have no voice against it. The sad fact is the majority of people buy into these ideals. We strive to be like supermodels even though we?ve become more aware of Photoshopping and what not. With the Voice, we want people to do two things: use their voice to point out where the media really gets it wrong. More importantly, we want people to point out where the media gets it right. We want to fuel advertisers who are doing a really good job and help others who might not be doing such a good job to change their ways.

Q. You?ve got apps for body-image assessment, awareness and improvement in the pipeline. What?s the ultimate aim with all these high-tech tools ?

A. The ultimate aim is institutional and individual use. [Institutionally], if a university decides they want to deploy eating-disorder prevention to their freshman, they could take our tools and do that easily. The [college] counseling center could also use our assessment measure to determine who might have deeper problems. [Individually], all these tools will be available to anyone. The beauty is they?re all clinically derived, meaning that I, as a professional, developed them, but you don?t have to be a professional to use them. So all of it can serve as self-help as well as institutionally-derived help.

Q. Anything else you want to tell me that I didn?t ask?

A. Even in the scientific literature, body image is thought about as an appearance-based thing. No one has ever talked about body image in the context of health. But it certainly affects our health, influencing our eating, our fitness and social habits. With everything we?re doing, we?re looking for a place where appearance and health can meet and basically be happy together.

China shows no support for Security Council vote

BEIJING (AP) ? China showed no clear support for new U.N. Security Council measures aimed at ending Syria's civil war, while saying Thursday it condemned the bombing that killed top Syrian officials and wanted an immediate cease-fire.

Russia already has indicated it would veto the proposed text, and fellow permanent Security Council member China has vetoed two past actions with Russia.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been visiting Beijing to convey to President Hu Jintao an urgent need for international action.

The Chinese foreign ministry statement issued Thursday evening said China opposes all forms of terrorism and violence and that it "strongly" condemned the bombing Wednesday in Damascus that killed Syria's defense minister and his deputy.

"China is deeply worried about the rising tensions in Syria," the statement said. "China once again called on all related parties in Syria to cease fire immediately."

The brief statement did not mention the Security Council vote but shows China has not changed its stance even as Syria's violence has escalated and Western nations have urged tougher action against President Bashar Assad's government.

The state-run Global Times newspaper's Chinese edition said in an editorial Thursday that Beijing should continue to align itself with Russia in voting in the U.N. Security Council.

The paper said that no matter how the situation unfolds in Syria, Beijing should maintain its position of opposing external military intervention.

"The West only wants a result that benefits their interest, and does not care if the process is peaceful," the newspaper said. "Yesterday's bloodshed in Damascus has made the West very excited. We just want to say one thing here: no matter how the Syrian situation develops later, let the process be less painful for the Syrian people."

UK judge forces Apple to state on its site that Samsung didn't copy the iPad

Apple is being forced by a British judge to tacitly state that Samsung didn't copy its iPad design. According to Bloomberg, Judge Colin Birss said that Apple has to post a notice both on its website and several British newspapers and magazines, to help correct the "damaging impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple's product." The online part will reportedly stay there for six months. Apple lost its case against Samsung in the UK earlier this month, with the same judge awkwardly branding the 10-inch Android tablet "not as cool" as the iPad.

George Zimmerman Accused of Sexual Molestation by Family Friend

George Zimmerman has been accused of a new heinous crime.

In just-released audio tapes related to the Trayvon Martin shooting, a family friend - who simply goes by the moniker "Witness9" - tells authorities that Zimmerman sexually molested her many times between the ages of 6 and 16.

"He would reach under the blankets and try to do things," the woman says, adding that the incidents mostly took place at Zimmerman's parents' house. "I would try to push him off, but he was bigger, stronger and older."

The unidentified female was contacted by prosecutors about a month after the Martin shooting, with these tapes recorded on March 20. She told investigators she finally came forward with the allegations because it marked the first time in her life she was "not afraid" of Zimmerman.

The woman said she has no knowledge of the shooting in question, but verified that Zimmerman made disparaging remarks about African-Americans when the two were young.

Zimmerman was eight years old and the woman six when the alleged molestations began. She added that she was not his only victim.

"He was very charming and personable with everybody in the family. But he was different behind closed doors with me... He was very intimidating."

The final incident took place when the woman was 16, she said, explaining that Zimmerman massaged her neck and kissed her until she ran out of the room. He was supposedly confronted about the actions by the woman and her parents in 2005, quickly apologized and walked away.

Zimmerman remains in jail at the moment as a judge decides whether to reinstate his bail.
