Idaho town seeks to lure gun and ammo makers

(AP) ? This small community in the forested, western foothills of the Rocky Mountains was created as a company town to house workers for the nation's largest white pine sawmill, and its tidy homes and straight, tree-lined streets are a testament to its planners.

But the town has slumbered since the Potlatch Lumber Co. mill closed in 1981, and was searching for an economic future when an ammunition maker decided last year to move its operations from the liberal Seattle area to this more conservative region.

The move by PNW Arms was like a signal flare to business and political leaders in the town of 800 people, who were in the process of trying to determine what industry would be best to pursue.

"We were in the middle of doing our marketing plan at the time and decided that firearms is the niche we would recommend," said Gary White of Kennewick, Wash., a business marketing consultant who is helping develop the town's pitch to gun makers.

Potlatch, they decided, would go from timber town to gun town. It would try to lure firearms and ammunition makers, and plans also called for hunting-themed housing and retail development.

"It will help draw some out-of-towners and out-of-staters," Mayor David Brown said.

Potlatch's efforts piggyback on a national trend in which firearms-friendly states are trying to pry gun and ammo makers out of the Midwest and Northeast, where some states have more restrictive gun laws.

The Idaho Department of Commerce is making firearms manufacturers a recruiting priority. The state recently passed a law that protects firearms makers from liability lawsuits or excessive regulation, White said.

"Lots of states are anti-firearms states," White said. "That is what Idaho is playing against, positioning itself as a firearms friendly state."

Firearms are a $3.8 billion industry that employs 90,000 people in the United States. The industry includes household names like Remington, Winchester, Smith & Wesson and Colt, but also more than 1,000 smaller companies.

"There are a number of states in the South and out West that have pitched to have companies relocate or start businesses in their states," said Lawrence Keane, spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the industry trade group.

South Dakota has had some success in luring companies, and states like Alabama, Montana, Idaho and Arizona have also rolled out the welcome mat, Keane said.

Many firearms companies have long been headquartered in states like Massachusetts and Connecticut, where the political climate has turned more hostile to firearms. Massachusetts, for example, has passed laws limiting the number of guns people can buy. Several states have passed or proposed laws calling for their gun makers to "micro-stamp" handguns with a mark on the firing pin that would allow bullet casings to be identifiable by gun owner.

No such fears in Idaho, a conservative state where firearms are a daily part of many people's lives.

"The regulatory environment in Idaho is friendly to guns and ammunition and we thought we could take this and run with it," said B.J. Swanson, head of economic development for Latah County.

Potlatch went public in April with its come-hither pitch to gun makers.

"We've had two nibbles already and we haven't even tried," Swanson said.

Swanson acknowledged that gun manufacturers would not be welcomed everywhere. Even in Latah County, they might face opposition 15 miles away in liberal Moscow, where the University of Idaho is based.

"In Potlatch, they would be welcomed with open arms," Swanson said. "I have not heard a single person in Potlatch saying, 'We don't want them here.'"

White agreed: "If we proposed this in Seattle or Portland, I'm sure it would be entirely different. For Potlatch, Idaho, this makes absolute sense."

The idea is to create a niche, like guns, and then recruit a cluster of companies to fill it, White said. In nearby Dayton, Wash., White is helping develop an organic food retail and business park to cash in on the tourists who visit the farm town.

Potlatch was created in 1905 to provide homes for the 500 workers at the Potlatch Lumber Co. mill. Nineteen of the homes built by the company are on the National Register of Historic Places, and City Hall used to be the mill headquarters. The mill closed in 1981, and no major business activity has emerged to replace the lumber jobs.

But Potlatch didn't shrivel up. Located a short distance from the university towns of Moscow and Pullman, Wash., Potlatch became a bedroom community for workers and students at both schools. Busy State Highway 6 serves as the main street through the town, and the small business community actually has trouble finding workers, said Dale Spring, owner of Dale's Wagon Wheel Bar & Grill.

Spring wonders where the workers would come from for any new firearms factory. "There's no labor force," he said.

Many Potlatch residents work at the universities, or at one of the thriving private sector employers in the Moscow-Pullman area, he said.

Local economic development leaders believe good-paying jobs will draw workers.

The lure for manufacturers is the former lumber mill site, of which 26 acres is set aside for firearms and related companies, White said. The mill site is currently without buildings, but has nearby utilities, is flat and the town has plenty of water and sewer capacity, Swanson said.

Nationally, there has been a big jump in the popularity of target shooting, largely the result of a slew of television programs on that subject, White said. They expect Potlatch's plan to appeal to some of those people, he said.

The marketing effort is funded by Potlatch Corp, which still owns the mill site, by local utility Avista, and by local city and county governments.

Town leaders were careful to use the word "firearms'" in the pitch, Mayor Brown said. "Firearms sounds more friendly than gun park," Brown said.

Improving Your Home Can Be Done Very Easily | Roofing Repair ...

It is a wise thing to be careful when contemplating all the details of home improvement projects first, though it can be exciting to plan them. Individuals aren?t encouraged to scramble into acquiring contractors, handyman?s or the purchase of materials before they are certain they have everything in order. One must be certain to keep inside the budgeted amount, for instance, and think about things such as efficient energy usage and strength on top of how everything appears.

A simple thing that you should definitely attempt to do when you do home-improvements is remove any excess clutter lying around. By simply getting rid of unnecessary items in her home, you can liven the entire interior decor up in a matter of hours; this of course does not apply to people that are neat!

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ? A US Airways jet traveling from Paris to North Carolina was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after a French passenger handed a note to a flight attendant mentioning that she had a surgically implanted device, raising fears of a terror scenario that security officials had warned about.

There is no evidence the plane was ever in danger, officials said. An examination by two doctors aboard the plane found that the passenger, a French citizen born in Cameroon, had no scars or incisions, said U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who was briefed by Transportation Security Administration chief John Pistole.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department warned airlines last summer that terrorists are considering surgically hiding bombs inside humans to evade airport security.

"We have seen intelligence identifying surgically implanted bombs as a threat to air travel," said Collins, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee.

Two F-15 fighters scrambled to escort Flight 787 with 179 passengers and nine crew members to Bangor International Airport, where it landed shortly after noon.

The Boeing 767 was about 40 minutes away from Bangor when local officials were alerted. After landing, it taxied to a remote part of the airport where law enforcement officials removed the passenger, said Tony Caruso, acting airport manager.

Passengers were advised to keep their shades down during a movie, so they didn't realize fighter jets had been dispatched to intercept the flight, said Stuart Frankel of Baltimore. Also, there were a couple of calls on the overhead speakers for doctors, but that didn't seem especially unusual either, he said.

Eventually, the pilot advised that the jet needed to land for fuel in Maine.

"We saw lots of police and federal customs people take a woman off the plane in handcuffs," Frankel said. "People were amazed at what was going on. We didn't know what was happening until we landed."

Several passengers said they'd noticed that particular passenger because of her slight stature and big eyelashes. They said she attracted attention by walking up and down the aisle throughout the flight.

William Milam from Richmond, Va., said he'd spoken French with the woman and helped her get her luggage into an overhead bin.

After the woman was removed from the flight, passengers were informed that they'd have to leave while the jet was checked for explosives, Milam said. "This is like, 'Wow,'" he said. "I'm thinking drugs. And they're thinking explosives."

The passengers were kept in a secure area before being allowed back onto the jet, which departed 3 1/2 hours later for Charlotte, N.C.

U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who was briefed on the matter, said the woman who was detained was traveling alone without any checked baggage and intended to stay in the U.S. for 10 days.

The FBI, which is conducting the investigation, interviewed passengers before the plane departed.

"At this time, there is no evidence that the plane or its passengers were ever in any actual danger," said Greg Comcowich, an FBI spokesman in Boston.

He said the agency wouldn't confirm the status nor release the identity of the passenger who caused the flight to be diverted.

The TSA issued a statement saying the passenger exhibited suspicious behavior that warranted the unscheduled stop.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the flight was diverted to (Bangor) where it was met by law enforcement," said TSA spokesman Sterling Payne.

The Bangor airport is accustomed to dealing with diverted flights.

It's the first large U.S. airport for incoming European flights and the last U.S. airport for outgoing flights, with uncluttered skies and one of the longest runways on the East Coast. Aircraft use the airport when there are mechanical problems, medical emergencies or unruly passengers.

Home to a Maine Air National Guard unit, the airport also serves as a refueling hub for military aircraft transporting personnel and cargo to and from Europe and the Middle East.

Encouraging Entrepreneurialism in Your Business ? 6 Steps to Take ...

If your business is lacking in entrepreneurialism then you could be losing customers, losing sales, and losing ground to your competitors. That?s not something any business wants to do without a fight. That?s why I have put together six easy steps for your business to take that?ll pump energy throughout your organization ? from the cleaner to the boardroom.

1. Incentivize

As a business owner, you should look for ways to motivate your employees. Offering them bonuses, especially when they are closely tied to performance in their job, will likely benefit your staff and in turn your business. Entrepreneurialism is something that?s only ever truly harnessed when a person is exploring ways to improve their own wealth and achievements.

2. Track Performance

You can tell how successful your business has been by taking a look at your P&L. As a member of staff within your business, especially the lower down the ladder you go, the less a person?s performance is tied to the profit of your business. Incentivising your staff to perform is one thing; however you should also ensure you track your staff and show them how they perform against their co-workers. This will unlock hidden energies within your staff, and make them compete with one another. This is evolution at work. The great workers will thrive in this workplace dynamic and the poorer workers will need some training to help them catch up.

3. Freedom of Thought

Entrepreneurialism needs freedom to flourish. That?s why you should give your staff room to explore their ideas, and contribute meaningful things to your business. Google give their staff 20% time, which means that their staff are allowed to spend 20% of their working hours exploring ways to improve Google?s existing products and create new ones. This is an innovative way to encourage loyalty within your organization.

4. Personal Stake

Nothing encourages entrepreneurialism like equity. Just ask Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and all the other famous business leaders that have made their mark. Although their passion and knowledge got them so far, they probably performed better because they had a share in the game. Consider offering your staff stock options. If you are a smaller firm, this can be particularly meaningful.

5. Share Information

Don?t just tell your staff only how they are doing when it comes to meeting their own targets. Let them also know how the broader business is doing too. Your staff likes to know if sales are up or down, and if the business is going places. If you let them know how things are working out, they might have great ideas to contribute. Not only that, but when people know what the business is aiming for, everyone might rally behind the same common goals.

6. Strong Team

If entrepreneurialism exists within parts of your organization, and you actively encourage it, then it should spread throughout your business. In order to ensure this happens, and that the best staff influence everyone else, you need to ensure you have a strong team. Don?t be afraid to invest in team building exercises to make sure you get the dynamics right for everybody.

On Termites and Home Infestation#

Termites are said to damage approximately 600,000 homes in the US alone, and its residents spend roughly $5 billion annually to eradicate and fix the problems caused by these parasites. House pest control experts describe termites as wood-destroying insects that are capable of disintegrating the entire structure of a typical house.

What some people don't know is that termites have been around since the dawn of dinosaurs. They live in colonies with their queen and have to eat constantly. These little oval-shaped critters measure approximately ?" to 5/8" mm. They are long, narrow six-legged parasites that like to chew on moist woods.

Its colony is characterized as follows:

Queen

A female termite that has wings, and can produce eggs upon consummation is considered the queen of the colony--the same thing goes for the king. The queen has the capability of ?physogastry' or expansion of the abdomen to accommodate reproduction. It can live up to 45 years and can lay 2,000 eggs a day.

Workers

The workers are responsible for foraging and storing of food in the colony. They also oversee the overall maintenance of the colony and take care of its brood. They digest cellulose found in rotting wood.

Soldiers

The soldiers guard the nesting grounds. They have different structures compared to worker termites, as soldier ants develop strength and tough ?armor' coatings which are useful against attacks.

The last thing that you'll need in your home is a colony of termites jacking up all the wooden structures leaving no smidgen behind. No home is safe, because once a colony starts to accumulate in a certain area, it becomes unstoppable. According to termite control Orange County experts, termites leave their colonies to form a new one sometime during spring or fall and like to swarm on homes.

Termites are subtle, as they often eat and nest without homeowners knowing about it. If you get to see one, you're already in trouble as it's likely they've already accumulated in certain areas of your home. Sagging floors, cracking paint, loose plaster and jammed doors or windows are some of the signs of termite infestation, according to an Orange County termite control professional.

As advised by a professional, don't wait until your home gets ravaged by termites. Have a termite inspection Orange County experts suggest performed in your home. If already infested, have a termite control expert do a fumigation of the area. Visit allabouthome.com/tips/pests/termites.html for more info about termites.

Neuroscientists develop game for stroke rehabilitation, give Wii run for its money

Think the Wii has the market cornered on gaming rehab? Think again -- neuroscientists at Newcastle University are developing a series of motion controlled video games to make stroke rehab more fun and accessible. The team's first title, dubbed Circus Challenge, lets patients digitally throw pies, tame lions and juggle to help them build strength and regain motor skills. As players progress, the game ratchets up its difficulty, presumably to match pace with their recovery.

Although Limbs Alive, the game's publisher, has only described their motion controller as "next-generation," it affirms that the game will be playable on PCs, laptops and tablets later this year. In an effort to lower costs and provide at-home therapy, the team hopes to leverage a £1.5 million award from the UK's Health Innovation Challenge Fund to build a system that will allow therapists to monitor patient progress remotely. The whole enchilada still needs some time to bake, but you can hit the break for a video and the full press release.

Heat regroup, relax after shocking loss to Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? As panic ensued along South Beach and the national scrutiny intensified, the Miami Heat decided to chill out.

After the storm, there was silence.

One day after they lost by 19 points and Dwyane Wade lost his cool in Game 3 against a balanced Indiana team growing in confidence and not getting nearly enough credit, the Heat canceled Friday's practice and media availability. They stayed back in their downtown hotel to recharge mentally and physically.

Miami needed a short-term escape.

A team that loves the spotlight dodged it for a day.

Trailing 2-1 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals and with Chris Bosh unlikely to return in this series, the Heat are in trouble and have two days to regroup before a Game 4 that LeBron James has already deemed vital to the team's NBA championship chase.

"It's a must win, honestly," the league MVP said after Game 3. "We've just got to go out and play."

The Pacers also took advantage of the two-day break ? per NBA rules, teams are not typically required to meet with the media when there are two off days between games and they do not practice ? between games to rest and recover. They chose not to practice either, but coach Frank Vogel doesn't have nearly the issues facing Miami's Erik Spoelstra, whose team appeared to unravel during Thursday's loss.

As the Pacers pulled away in the third quarter, Wade, having one of the worst playoff games of his career, got into an ugly sideline exchange with Spoelstra. An angry Wade appeared to swear at his coach before brushing him aside and then had to be steered away from the coach's huddle by several teammates.

"We've got a lot of alpha males in this locker room," said veteran forward Udonis Haslem, who managed to settle down Wade. "It's all constructive criticism. I don't think it's personal with anybody. Emotions get high. It's the playoffs."

Spoelstra tried to dismiss the confrontation with Wade following the game, but the damage was done and the sight of one of Miami's "Big Three" arguing with his coach raised questions about the Heat's future should they again fall short of a title.

"We're all connected," Spoelstra said. "Dwyane and I have been together for a long time, a long time. We've been through basically everything. A lot of different roles, a lot of different teams. That really is nothing. That type of fire, shoot, that's good.

"That is the least of our concerns. Our concern is getting ready for Sunday."

Wade's health, however, is a major worry.

The eight-time All-Star is clearly not himself. He's not making explosive moves to the basket and settling for jump shots that aren't falling.

He scored just 5 points ? his second-lowest output in 95 career postseason games ? on 2 of 13 shooting. He didn't score in the first half and didn't adequately support James, who has had to move to power forward with Bosh out with a strained abdominal muscle. If not for Mario Chalmers kicking in 25 points, many coming on aggressive drives, the Heat would have been beaten even worse.

Wade has reportedly been receiving extra medical treatments for lingering leg soreness. He doesn't have his usual lift, which could account for many of his jumpers being short. He's never been one to make excuses, and Wade, who missed 17 games this season with assorted injuries, won't start now.

"At this point of the season, no one is 100 percent," Wade said, refusing to disclose if he has a serious injury.

To be fair, Wade isn't the only reason the Heat are in hot water. Miami's bench hasn't stepped up. The Heat are 5 of 42 on 3-pointers, and Miami's front line is being outrebounded by Indiana's big men, who have thrown their weight around inside.

The Pacers are punishing the Heat.

"We will not back down or take anything from any team," said forward David West, who has delivered some well-placed elbows into James' back on defense. "We are not going to be pushed around."

Center Roy Hibbert dominated at both ends of the floor in Thursday's win, racking up 19 points, 18 rebounds, five blocks and an unspecified number of alterations. Of all Miami's problems, the 7-foot-2, 260-pound Hibbert could be its biggest.

The 25-year-old is beginning to put it all together, and his maturity is a major reason the Pacers have risen from also-ran status to contenders this season. Hibbert has been getting tutelage from an unlikely mentor, San Antonio center Tim Duncan, who has been helping him with his skills in the paint and outside the lines.

"We sat down and talked to see how he goes about his business," Hibbert said of the Big Fundamental. "He doesn't get too high or too low. I model my game after him. He texts me after every game. I'm very appreciative."

Vogel was grateful he had Hibbert in Game 3.

"One of the best games I've ever seen him play," he said.

Without Bosh, Spoelstra, who started Dexter Pittman at center in Game 3, doesn't have an answer inside for Hibbert, who helped the Pacers outrebound the Heat 52-36.

Miami's next rebound, though, must be to even the series at 2-2 and get back to Florida, where Bosh has remained to get extensive rehab so he can return in the next round.

A loss on Sunday would put the Heat on the brink of elimination, well short of a championship Miami has craved since losing in the finals last season.

While others have their doubts about Miami's chances, Spoelstra believes his team can bounce back.

"Everything can change in the next two days with a win, and we have a lot of veteran guys who understand that," he said. "We're fine and that extra day of rest will help us."

21st Century Music Technology | Gareth Young

(This article is taken from the?forthcoming DAH?iBook).

?

As we travel through the technological epochs of the twenty-first century, musicians are curiously adapting the applied sciences to suit the needs of contemporary electronic music. As musicians in the twenty-first century are exposed to portentous computing power, the genre is always changing and mutating technology into somewhat antithetic applications. The technological advances we are making in various fields are being taken up by creative individuals to make music that is often unconventional, but progressive.

?

In the twentieth century, we saw a rapid spurt of technological advances in the applied sciences. It was at the dawn of this era that we first saw Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin take to the sky, and in a science lab somewhere in the world, the first radio was receiving messages through the aether. Over a period of only one hundred years we now fly through the air at thousands of kilometres per hour and almost every home on the planet has an old analogue radio receiver. So how has twenty-first century technology developed over the last decade and what does that mean for composers of modern, contemporary music?

?

As technological advances have progressed, so have the manners in which we produce sound and music. Throughout the twentieth century, we leaped through rapid accelerations in science, creating new musical instruments from this technology. The birth of electronic music took place, and electronic musical instruments took form from the output of engineering science labs. Engineering experts became composers and composers became sound scientists. Another fascinating change occurred as technology became musical. This was that ?noise? became art and electro-acoustics became entwined with the musical genre of old. It has been convincingly argued in literature how music technology has managed to shift human mental and physical orientations, encouraging the evolution of the industrious culture we live in today.

?

Changes in musical interaction follow closely the technological advances, but these are not the only issues that require addressing. There is also the philosophical changes that have occurred. With the omnipotent technology that we have in our homes, the musician is now very much a part of the conceptualisation as they are in the performance. Musicians are now composers and vice-versa. Whereas in the twenty-first century, a musician was expected to strictly follow the instructions of a composer and their interpretations of a score were seriously frowned upon. Improvisation and artistic expression have burst into modern musicality with both barrels blazing.

?

For many, sound is taken for granted. We are constantly bombarded with ?noise? from the moment we are born. Be it the steady beat of a heart monitor or the smack of a doctors hand, in our first moments of existence in this world, we are submerged in sound. Even before birth scientists believe that a developing child in the womb can recognise voices and music and that these combined can effect a child?s development from within. So as sound is all around us from the start it is no wonder that we strive to control its production with the modern tools we are given as we grow. Think back to when you were a child, were you given a pseudo-musical instrument early on?

?

What about the younger generation?s toys today? Technology is very much a part of early life and it is no wonder that today?s musicians are using every means available to expose the inner workings of electronic sound generation to the greater public. Of which, just take these sounds as a given, as something that comes out from devices so easy a child can use them. Back in the twentieth century, these means of musical creation would have taken expensive circuitry or months of computer programming. The technology available was just not good enough for the realisation of an artistic concept.

?

Towards the end of the twentieth century we saw the introduction of MIDI into musical devices. Since then, we have seen this very basic and often limited musical communication language take over and become the most prolific, ?all encompassing? technology of electronic and acoustic art. In the twenty-first century, this dated technique is still used and its limitations are ever noticeable by string and wind players all over the world. The use of MIDI has dominated the market for keyboard instruments due to the commercial interests of the founding companies. The new musical technology being produced today is liberated by the inclusion of artists in the conceptualisation of musical devices.

?

The simple comparison of basic sound generating devices over generations highlights the technological advances of music technology in the twenty-first century. If we look at the images on our televisions, in our magazines, or on billboards, musicians are no longer wielding cumbersome guitars or holding up keyboards, but they have the power to generate music from within tiny boxes with less obvious means of sound production. This is the computer music generation, and they are here to replace the old analogue electronic technology with digitalised sounds. Sounds which have no natural sound generating device that can be seen or even held.

?

The creation of sound has been the one dominating factor in the design of musical instruments. A sound generator being agitated via bow, blow or strike has a natural sound quality that we can all recognise. This knowledge of natural sound creation helps us to understand an acoustic event and even how we can control one. The physical characteristics of an instruments dictate the sound produced, the control restraints we put on it and these devices have been developed over many millennia. The same cannot be said for digital sound creation.

?

However, digital technology can no longer be considered as a new concept, as it has been around now for a few decades. Furthermore, with digital technology we are presented with an almost limitless world of sonic and musical possibilities. This technology was initially only available for the large academic institutions that could afford massive computers and synthesis devices. This digital computing may have been around for a while, but it was never more affordable than it is today. Affordability of digital devices, such as laptop computers means that the masses now have the means of manipulating the digital realm from their home or studio. Sound synthesis is only a quick click and download away and once you have the means, the possibilities are endless. These possibilities are restricted only by the end users ability or imagination.

?

Digital music has presented us with a new blank slate for musical composition. The composition of music through computers is slowly replacing the more traditional paper and pencil methods of old. This contemporary means of composition is also finding its way into traditional musical genre. It is not unnatural for say jazz musicians to have digital improvisations accompanying them on a CD or on-stage. Computer music can no longer be confined to just the electronic music taxon, but it is now a tool to be wielded by all who possess a computer. Current processor speeds can quite easily handle real time sound synthesis and modern software is designed to be graphically pleasing and intuitive to operate.

?

In the early stages of the twenty-first century, we are embracing the digital as an old friend and incorporate it into everything we can. As computers become faster, so do our means of expressing our musicality become more extravagant. Our input device is no longer a keyboard for writing a long string of complicated coding to produce a colourful tone, but a single hand gesture can be recognised as a control parameter that will change anything the musician desires. To realise these methods sensor technology must also be a considerable influence on the computer music generation. The means by which a musician interacts with his digital creations is also mutating. Controlled only by the direction of technological advancements in this field.

?

Not only are infra-red and motion sensors readily available from electronic stores and internet distributors, but motion tracking devices are being introduced into the home via games consoles. The Wii controller release in 2006 revolutionised home computer entertainment, and it was not long after that this controller was reverse engineered and applied to musical applications. Recent releases include the Sony PlayStation Move controller, with the ability to track movement and location through the use of technology similar to that of the Wii and the use of a camera. Also, Microsoft have launched the Xbox 360 Kinect system, which relies only on observation of motion to control game movements. How long before these are incorporated into twenty-first century music technology? The answer is almost instantly. Examples of the use of these devices without a games console are available online to view today. Hacking this technology is not readily accepted by the distributor, but it is impossible to stop the curious minds of creative individuals.

?

The concepts, ideas and even the technology of the newly released to the public controllers are by no means ?new? either. Academic research has been carried out for decades on capturing gestures for musical manipulation, but this was limited to the elite institutes specialising in these fields and was not available for the average amateur to reconstruct and manipulate for their own means.

?

And yet, as time creeps forwards in this century, there are those among us who yearn and even cry out for a revival of the old technology. The clinical sound of a perfectly constructed waveform is almost painful to the ears of some fans of the analogue world. The need for society to relive the old, for a trend to come around again and again requires the same technology to be reproduced and revisited. So we reach a peculiar point in time. One which sees us being given more freedom of expression than any other generation before and yet we are still pining for the ?old? sounds that coevals of the last century were limited to.

?

The production of music through natural means is inspiring, but also restrictive. The limitations of acoustic instruments become very apparent when a beginner picks one up for the first time. Whilst we have full waveform production, we also have full control over it?s creation. This control can be unstable and non-linear to a beginner, but is something that a competent player would be attracted to. Years of practice can be rewarding, but far too time consuming in this fast paced century. On the other hand, we have the engineering principles of HCI developing new musical devices with ?user friendly? principles. These principles often overlook the rewards that are coveted by skilled performers of acoustic instruments. The freedom of expression that is attained via acoustically imperfect instruments, is lost in the use of clean cut digital interfaces. However, the new music generation find the immediate rewards very gratifying and inspiring.

The ?cut and paste? computer generation is now faced with a hunger to go out and gather their own means of sound generation and the construction of analogue devices to reproduce the ?warmth? in music that is somewhat missing in today?s home produced music. Musicians are rummaging through the attics, storage rooms, second hand stores trying to reclaim that which was disposed of in order to make room for the new.

?

So what we see today, after living through the first decade, is an amalgamation of old and new ideas being brought to the public and laid on their lap. The general populous are given creative freedom to manipulate old technologies, freedom to develop new and intriguing sounds digitally, and are offered this opportunity to do so at a fraction of the cost it used to in the twentieth century. How lucky we are to be given such freedom, how lucky we are to live in the twenty-first century.

Facebook prices at top of range in landmark IPO

By Olivia Oran and Alistair Barr

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc priced its initial public offering at the top of its target range to raise more than $16 billion, as strong demand, particularly from retail investors, fuels anticipation of a big pop in the stock when it begins trading Friday on the Nasdaq.

Predictions of how much the stock will rise on its first day of trade vary greatly -- some experts said the high IPO price and increased float could limit gains to 10 percent to 20 percent, while others said anything short of a 50 percent jump would be disappointing given the hype.

"I think anything over 50 percent will be considered a successful offering -- anything under that would be underwhelming," said Jim Krapfel, analyst at Morningstar. "A lot of retail investors are not concerned about valuation. That's what is going to drive the first day pop."

Facebook is selling a 15 percent stake priced at $38 a share, giving the world's largest online social network a valuation of $104 billion.

That puts the eight-year-old company, founded in a Harvard dorm room by Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, a valuation akin to that of Amazon.com Inc and exceeding that of Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc combined.

In an event that many say is as much a cultural phenomenon as it is a business story, Facebook will make its Wall Street debut at around 11 a.m. on Friday on the Nasdaq.

Investor enthusiasm for Facebook shares comes despite questions about the company's long-term money-making capabilities, particularly after it reported a quarter-to-quarter revenue slide in April.

"Hundreds of millions of people are extremely passionate about this product. A lot of those people want to be a part of this event, of this company that they have an affinity for. That's creating a level of excitement for the stock that you don't normally see," said Steve Weinstein, an analyst with ITG Research.

Facebook, with some 900 million users, raised the target IPO price range on Tuesday to between $34 and $38 per share, from between $28 and $35. More than half of the proceeds of the offering will go to existing shareholders, including early backers such as Accel Partners and Russia's DST Global.

Facebook could raise north of $18.4 billion if a greenshoe option for underwriters is exercised, making the IPO the second-largest in U.S. history, after that of Visa Inc.

Some investors expected Facebook to price the offering at $40 per share. However, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell by more than 2 percent on Thursday, quelling such speculation.

"It probably would have gone at $40 if the market was not horrible," said Scott Sweet of research firm IPO Boutique. "I expect it to open at a nice premium, but I don't expect a LinkedIn-type performance because of the sheer size of this IPO. They have to move a lot of stock and there will be a lot of selling."

Shares of professional networking company LinkedIn Corp doubled on their first day of trading.

Lee Simmons, industry specialist at Dun & Bradstreet, forecast a 10 percent to 20 percent gain for Facebook on Friday.

"You've got a large offering at an increased price, so a huge pop may be difficult to achieve," Simmons said. "When you're talking about doubling or a pop the size of LinkedIn, it's more difficult to achieve because Facebook is just offering more shares ... The others were smaller floats, under 10 percent, so you had this artificial feeding frenzy."

On Wednesday, Facebook increased the size of the IPO by almost 25 percent to 421 million shares, a 15 percent float. The greenshoe, if exercised as expected, would expand the float to 18 percent.

Another social media company, Zynga Inc, an online games developer that makes lots of games for Facebook users, fizzled in its debut and ended down 5 percent on its first day of trading. No one Reuters spoke with said Facebook's stock would fall on Friday.

CHALLENGES REMAIN

Facebook will celebrate its Wall Street debut with an all-night "hackathon" at its Menlo Park, California, headquarters starting on Thursday evening, a company tradition in which computer programmers work on side projects that sometimes turn into mainstream offerings.

Despite the high expectations, Facebook faces challenges maintaining its growth momentum.

Some investors worry the company has not yet figured out a way to make money from the growing number of users who access Facebook on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. Meanwhile, revenue growth from Facebook's online advertising business, which accounts for the bulk of its revenue, has slowed in recent months.

Would-be investors have been warned by some financial advisers against jumping into Facebook right away, but the well-known brand could still attract enough interest to exceed the 458 million shares traded the day General Motors went public after emerging from bankruptcy in 2010.

One UBS adviser initially received calls from 12 clients clamoring to buy shares of Facebook, but over the past couple of weeks, two have changed their minds.

"A lot of people are thrown off by the recent negative stories in the press," the adviser said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "One guy was worried about General Motors stopping its advertising on Facebook."

GM said on Tuesday it would stop placing ads on Facebook, raising questions about whether the display ads on the site are as effective in reaching consumers as traditional media.

Overall, financial advisers are struggling to manage clients' expectations about what the stock will do and in some cases, if they will be able to get any stock for them.

"People want to just own it because they think it's the next Google and they missed out on that," said a financial adviser from Wells Fargo Advisors, the brokerage division of Wells Fargo & Co, which is part of the syndicate underwriting the deal.

Facebook has 33 underwriters for the IPO, led by Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs.
